Default Earth Problem?

I have an issue with my Amp, it keeps going into protect, but not 'every' time! It only happens when turning the car on, and not whilst it is on and playing. I can turn the car on and it will work straight away, other times I'll turn the key and it will go into protect, if I then turn the car off and back on again more often than not it will turn on..

Im wondering if this could be because of the earth? I had it earthed to the rear light's earth before, then changed it to the top of the strut in the boot, but it still does it. Can anyone tell me of a better earth, or maybe an explanation to this happening?

Thanks in advance

Its a Fusion amp and sub, Ive had it for a long time, and has been in many cars of mine, but it's been doing this since its been in this car, (2 years) but its really doing my head in and just wish someone could answer the question!! lol

It was never a problem in any of the other 3 cars, just this one, and since i installed a new head unit on saturday, and when its on it sounds fantastic, there is no problem with its performance whatsoever, the issue is just that sometimes it wont turn on when i turn the car on, but other times it will?

earth it to your boot latch /lock.
sounds more like a power problem though, as you switch from battery to alternator power perhaps a power spike.?
how have you got it wired with the live.?

I know the amp is 'Running' fine, as when the car allows it to turn on and on and not be in protect...it really is impressive!

It's just the issue with it going into protect, when the car is started on occasions?

Anyone know the best place to earth it to on a mk6 escort? is the rear strut the best place?

The live runs fused from the battery to the boot, as you would expect..?

If it was doing it all the time i think I'd agree, but its not every time, its really weird and has had a few people baffled with it!

No if it is turned on and working it doesn't then go in to protect whilst in use, it is only when i turn the car on that it happens sometimes, as i say its not every time.

Its been like it with 4 head units, one of them i used to turn it off and back on again and the amp would turn it on, one of the others if i flashed the head lights it would turn it on , the last one and this brand new one, it just happens sometimes and only at the point of turning the car on...

what gets me is that if there was something really wrong with it, it wouldn't turn on sometimes at all?

sounds like power supply to me, not to up to date on the equipment your using i always used Rockfo rd gear. if it was me i would investigate the power lead if it's drawing alot current look at using a farad cap or a second battery with a split charge kit.

on your chosen earth point make sure it is bare metal it is in contact with, you can paint it after to protect it. Also check your battery to chassis earth and engine to chassis earth
are good and not corroded. Upgrade the wires to higher spec if need be same size as your amp power cable. that should sort your earth if you then upgrade your alternator cable you have then done the big 3, and should be set for any system. But it does seem that your amp psu has become sensitive to voltage spikes.
