He must be a bit of a muppet if he doesn't know, I'd have at least kept the receipt!!
Just post a piccie of it, and any numbers you can find on it, if it were a BB/GT type there would be a massive and distinct lack of lag, what does it start boosting at, full boost at ?
It's got the std turbo damper fitted, it may just be a std one or a T34/35, just getting some bull from the owner/seller.

there does seem to be a bit of lag start boosting around 3.5 rpm , cant really compare it to anything, just seems a little laggy..
the car is in NZ but im living in Aussy looking at bringing it over soon so cant get any numbers of it for a wee while.
its had a adapter flange welded on to take a b/b turbo i was told and looks to be true.
dampner meaning wastgate actuator?
have alook at photos might be able to see.
could you see if it had dark greens?

I replied to another thread you had and said I suspect it to be a T34 (Also known as T35) however looking at that picture it looks even bigger T4 maybe but not sure by any means but it certainly looks bigger than a T34/35.

The power delivery is nothing like a modern car on these, they have inherent turbo lag which all cars of the era suffered from, obviously a bigger turbo doesn't help this.

No the turbo damper fits to the turbo and cylinder head and has like a little spring, you can see it in your pics, and yes I can confirm it has dark green injectors!

Here is a picture for others reference:

Default turbo

ok great so whats the purpose of the dampner, and the million dollar question how do you reduce lag, or with this kind of set up do you just live with it.
thanks.................

The purpose of the damper is just that, to reduce, or dampen down any vibration the turbo will naturally produce due to the high speeds it's spinning at, adding the fact that the way it is mounted effectively works as a lever on the manifold, and that it is roasting hot is a recipe for cracking to occur.
The damper was a bit added by Southampton University for NVH, noise vibration harshness issues, ie to make it nicer to drive, quieter with less vibration.
The turbo does indeed as said look more like a T4, and the lag you mention suggest this also, it is a really odd combination of T4 and dark green injectors, swapping to a T34 for example will see if boosting from around 1600rpm and full boost around the 2500 mark, in other words much more drivable in everyday use, with better economy.
I would when you get it take the ecu cover off, and check what chip it has, some idiots simply swap bits around with no though to it all having to work as a matched set of components, if say it is a T3 or T34 chip for dark greens the likely result of running a T4 would be a bucket full of bits that used to be your engine.
Make sure also it has had a fuel pump and fan rewire, these are essential on a cossie, the fan was very sub standard to start with when new and not up to the job.

As said the T4 is very unusual, a T34 is normal the route for that spec and is a good turbo, but there again it depends on what you personally want from the car, you simply don't need the bigger turbo in your current setup as you won't need to make the boost that it is potentially capable of, the RS500 had a T4 but only for homologation purposes, this is why they are laggy, in race trim they had eight injectors to supply enough fuel for the boost produced.

Personally I would be looking to change the turbo as this will make the car far more driveable!
