St170 clutch help
Hi, has any one had a clutch done on there st170? mine needs replacing and im just wondering about the possible costs and options on getting it done?
eg ford, clutch center or uprated kit and take it to a local mechanic? What did/would you do and pay?
Also i've heard that the fly should be changed at the same time so any info on that would be great thanks

I seem to remember something about it is quite involved, I think it may be the DMF has to be removed for the clutch to be replaced, as you say I know when they are done the DMF is replaced at the same time.

The clutch change on an ST170 takes a clutch specialist thats done many many ST170's nearly a complete day to preform a clutch change on an ST170, the gearbox has to come completely out the car and the DMF has to be changed, i would be very impressed if you managed it in 2 hours!!
Basically ford own the patten for the fly so you can only get this part from them, for a fly and clutch your looking at around Ł600 in parts, Ł250 in labour.
I spent Ł800 on having an aluminium lightweight fly fitted with a stage 3 clutch instead, i fitted the clutch myslef and it took me 2 days and its a job im familiar with.

cheers, i've had quotes between Ł780-Ł1100 for the fly fit aswell or Ł380-Ł600 for just the clutch- do you rekon the cheaper end is a bit to cheap? I'd love to do it myself but im a chippy and can only service it.
Also just out of interest whats the difference between normal flys and a dmf and why does it have to be changed on st170's?-i think mine defo will as it sounded, felt and smelt like a good job.
Thanks for the help as its a lot of dosh right after crimbo- although i wouldn't mind if it was for extra bhp's!

yeah i've just been looking at what and how dmfs work like and now understand, cant work out why they have to change it when you do clutch tho and not just stick with the one you got?
i could be tempted to look into solids- does any one sell them with clutch and bits as a complete package?
Man min of Ł780 for a clutch is a ball ache!- i feel like i deserve a bluefin with it.
thanks again for the help tho.

U most be joking mate a day what u taking the engine out or something? Ok there was two of us but its just a front wheel drive gearbox it took us around 2 hrs gearbox out and in got the clutch from ford its a exchange unit some people must just be faster than others nice gearbox to do the worst thing is the startermotor if i recall.
I think i would have the engine out of the car in two hours and thats on a driveway!
The boxes are tiny theres enough room between the box the the chassis rail to squeeze the box out, so its not that big of a job!
Also its best to change both the clutch and the flywheel!
I have this gearbox in my fiesta ST and got a 6 puck paddle clutch and flywheel package from the states (ebay) for about Ł600

two days!!! lol how many cups of tea did you have! i can do these in approx 3 hours on my own you can get the parts from euro car parts if your in the trade for less than half the price of ford parts and they are still genuine ford pards in ford boxes, i however would fit the conversion kit or uprated clutc and fly that way if it ever goes again you only need to change the clutch

Yeah, im thinking about it. Just out of interest does it always need a fly wheel change and why do you have to change it? If i can get the clutch done for Ł380 that would be better for me than Ł1100 uprated.
cheers for the help i've got a headache now tho!

I didnt change mine it looked fine and has never given any probs over the last year so i say no.

Reason the flywheel change is done is because of the troublesome DMF, it's not essential but most just do it while there, in the same way you replace the whole clutch assembly despite just the clutch plate at fault.

It did indeed take me 2 days but i removed refurbished and painted all the suspension componants hubs etc lol.Respect to the guys who can do this in a matter of hours, obviously too many cups of tea lol.
Basically the DMF is two fly wheels joined with a flexible rubber bushing which flexes when you take up drive to give a super smooth gear change, the rubber perishes and the two plates start to flex too much and eventually make contact and you get a nice chattering sound from your gearbox as the two parts touch. It is not a case of if the DMF will fail but when so if a clutch change is needed then Change the DMF otherwise you will end up doing the job twice, my ST170 only had 50K on it when i changed the clutch and the DMF was a mess. Fitting the solid lightweight flywheel has transformed the car, its so much faster at accelerating and responsive. I have quite a few mods but the fly has dropped my 0-60 time to under 7 seconds. Only problem is a lightweight fly produces clutch chatter which sounds like a busted released bearing!! If you can live with the chatter at idle get a lightweight item. Oh change the slave cylinder too whilst your there.
2 days work begins lol
lightweight fly
stage 3 clutch
All back together again

luk make the clutches and flywheels for ford
you can buy them direct from euro car parts and dingbro for half the price
same deal with the 130bhp mondeo tdci's
you dont NEED to change the slave cylinder and flywheel, but its recommended to do while the box is out
as for labour times, in my garage i charge Ł175 labour for these, takes 2.5-3.5hrs to do, just depends how energetic i'm feeling lol
i look at it as good money for a few hrs work,
but been told plenty times that i'mthe cheapest around by far, not that hard to do realy, only a little tighter than an average focus

Bringing this one back to life... Have anyone bough a clutch kit, stock or light weight lately? If so, were did you get it and how much did it cost?
I'm looking at buying a cheap ST170 with 195'000km (120'000 miles) on the original clutch, so I guess I'm gonna have to rip out that gear box soon...

ST170 Solid Mass Conversion
For those hardcore St170 fans out there (this post and car are pretty old) I recently purchased an ST170 solid mass flywheel conversion kit from RTS Performance. It still needs bedding in but I am pretty happy with it so far.
I thought that I would share this as the post shown up for me when I search st170 clutch on google.
This is the kit that I bought:
