Default Alternator Wires (Zetec)

Hey guys,

Im pretty sure both wires should be connected but all ask anyways. The main red wire is attached but I have a small blue wire hanging near by. What is this for? I know it for alternator as its been snapped off by overtightening but could this be problem being my battery dying all the time. I was going to buy a new battery today and thought Id have a look and found this little problem so if this wire is for charging then possibly wont need a battery? Thanks for any help people

Yes it does the blue wire is live when ignition is switched on (It's the return from the battery light) it excites the field windings which starts the charge process if this is disconnected there will be no output unless revved hard.

At the moment you will have no battery light and will not have any charge either.

What he said, if it's snapped off, can you not open the rear of the alt/cover and connect a wire this way.

If you have snapped connector rather than terminal then I would just put a small ring connector on end with a nut, I would not solder in case it damages components inside the alternator due to heat.

Solder will be fine, heat will not be a problem, but with you needing to get a bolt to that temp(300C or thereabouts) any close fitting plastic will melt, this is with it off the car and opened up though, plus you will need a beefy iron to get enough heat, they don't get any hotter but can solder things thicker as they can keep up with heat needed.
As said a no no on the car really.
