Default Gearbox for 2.1 Zetec Turbo

I am currently restoring an RS turbo S2, I am going to put a 2.1 Zetec Turbo engine in which will give about 250 bhp. The engine and gearbox configuration will remain transverse. Can anyone suggest which gearbox would be suitable I want one with an LSD in it.

standard rst one will bolt to a zetec no probs just put a uprated clutch in it.
Not sur how long it will last depends on how you drive it. You can put an ib5 box in it(with a bit of work) which is a bit stronger than the rst bc one and you can put a rst lsd in it. Or for loads of work put a mt75 box in.
Hope this helps.

IB5 and BC boxes are the same, only starter location is different... I don't see why it should be any stronger.

If you go for RST BC box, you'll have to use CVH EFI flywheel with enlarged bolt holes or 1.8/1.6 zetec flywheel as the 2.0 mondeo one will not fit.

People in my neighbourhood keep on braking those MTX boxes on their standard RS2000, so how can it hold more on 2.1 ZVH???

By a gearboxman stage 2+ quaife diff with that and sorted for that power

300 + then look at focus rs or st170 box options

So you say focus MTX difers from escort MTX (that was in XR3 and RS2000)?

mtx is the only way forward,or 6 speed st170 box,had my mtx, with quaife atb in for approx 2500mls and beleive me it aint had an easy life,i put a standard mtx in as a test subject to start with, thats as they come no mods whatsoever,i abused it for over 1000mls and try i may,i could not brake it,good goin considering i had done 9 ib5 boxes in under 10 months.

A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS DANGEROUS. IT GET REALLY PI$*ED OFF WHEN PEOPLE THINK THEY KNOW ABOUT GEARBOXES. IB5 & BC BOXES ARE DIFFERENT INTERNALLY.

A few of the bearings are larger in size, the gears are slightly wider, and the syncros are better on the first few gears. Casings are ribbed too for less flex.

Good info... you shouldn't believe everything you read on the net. As the fact that IB5 and BC are the seme I read there. Anyway reading what Wul Young says that doesn't help the IB5 to be stronger.

Now question to Wul what car did you take your MTX off that worked for you? as you see some say that focus ones are different from escort ones.

hi m8,focus ones mount differently for start, and have cable, not all of them though, this is easily changed though as both gearsets are exacly tha same, the difference is coice of three different final drives,as i found out by stupidly fitting a 4.1 final drive instead of the 3.8 i have been using and was used to,back to 3.8 now though.but i would say driveshaft setup is a big part to play, equal length is night and day in my car, tried both ways over winter, just to know for myself and anybody that wants my opinion if all these theries and old wifes tales were true,as i say thats my opinion and it works very well for me,oh and geometry is key facter to.
