I have an oil leak and I think its coming from the front crank seal. Now I have the service book but it doesn’t say if I need to drain the oil to do the job, I presume I do?
Also is it possible to replace the seal without the special tools which are referred to in the book?
Cheers

yes you can do it without draining oil just jack car up with the front of the engine highest so the oil will go back to the gbox end of the sump.
can be done ithout special tools normally depends what car/engine it is!

You will lose next to no oil at all, don't even need to jack it up at one end, just jack as normal or on a lift etc, the oil lives at a much lower level at the rear of the sump.
You can use a woodscrew into the seal and draw it out a little at a time working arond the edge, or just very carefully with a screwdriver flip the seal out.
Try to replace with a VITON SEAL, as these are way better than the ford rubbish, cost about £9 a seal.
The seal will have the number 42-56-7, on it as this is the inner/outer/width dimensions.

Best place is a dedicated seal supplier, I can phone my local one on monday if you like, I am quite sure this size is available in VITON, not all sizes are unfortunately, cam seals defo are as I have them.

Thats would be great Tabetha if you could
Does the auxiliary pulley also have a seal? I may as well replace this at the same time as im not 100% sure where the leaks coming from..

Yes auxillary pulley on jackshaft does have a seal the same size as crank seal as well.
You may have a leak from the housing of the crank or aux pulley seal as well, I would wash it all down just to check first, in case it isn't the seals themselves.

it only leaks when its being driven, doesn’t seem to leak when just on tickover.
Ive had it all apart today and removed the crank seal and ive think ive found the problem.
I have a CNC aux pulley bolt and ive noticed before oil pooling on the aux pulley but just put it down to it dripping off the cam belt. Now as i loosened the aux bolt oil started to drip out from around the bolt before it was even all the way out and it seems the tread on the none standard bolt isn’t quite large enough as the bolt rattles around when not 100% wound right in so I think the oil has been pushed out the tread when the pressure is up.
Does this sound plausible or am I talking shite?

If I understand you correctly, the bolt that holds on the auxillary pulley, has oil leaking out ?
Odd as there is hole all the way through the aux shaft from what I can remember, I also seem to remember but could be wrong the aux bolt is a fine thread bolt(?) so should be a very snug fit with no real wobble at all once in say 5mm, if this is the case, checke it is the CORRECT thread, and just apply some sealant to the threads as you tighten it up again, or PLASTISCINE, works just as well.

Yes you understand correct Tab, the aux shaft does seem to have a hole all the way through for oil to escape from, as the bolt is a non standard item in think the thread is just not big enough, it seems to wind on fine but there is too much movement there for it to seal correctly. I will get a standard bolt and use some gasket sealer job done I hope..
I will change the crank seal now anyway as I have it out now
Cheers for the help
