Eccentric Top Mounts and a Part-time road car
Right, i have a fiesta as a project car, the aim of it is to be a road-going car that is built for the track
i'm currently looking into alloy top mounts (Concentric or eccentric, i haven't decided yet) but have heared they're not the greatest when using them on the road, why is this?
i'll literally be using the car at weekends, and then occaisionally driving to and from shows and track events.
would they be ok for my car? i'll be doing less than 5k per year

Hello! I have used eccentric topmounts for ten years on my Sierra without any problems. One thing to think about is that you get a set that doesn,t shorten your suspension travel too much, or raise the car. Many top mounts is made of a plain disc that doesn,t allow the upper spring platform to be in the same place as it is standard.

Hi Adam,
The top mounts will be fine, its the tranferal of road noise when using anything solidly mounted to the shell/chassis that people take a dislike to, you will hear and feel more through the steering wheel and through the car iteself, good in a competetion car, not so good on a full time road car. The shell will suffer a little more stress and you might think about some additional torsion/strengthening to compliment the top mounts, but overall for any track cars i'd say they were beneficial.

if you look at this pic:
you can see that the strut tops have been extended (basically a piece of CDS tubing has been welded in with a flat pate welded to the top)
he has fitted fixed alloy top mounts, but i can go for eccentric if i wish...

ah ok, thanks for letting me know. So is it a mk5 your fitting it to? The mk3 ones are already a similar shape but the extension bit would probobaly need to be made bigger. Are you doing the work yourself?

basically it depends on certain things
if you want to keep a relatively standard suspension geometry, then the fixed version are fine
if you want adjstability, then you will need the eccentric ones
(they allow you to move position of top of strut and therefore adjust suspension geometry)
the only other option is if you want 1 or two piece top mounts
two piece are easier to service/replace bearings, but 1 piece are the norm.

Okay.. and I guess that adjustable not is that much of a must on a roadcar as mine??
Is sound like exiting upgrades when my topmounts need replacement, cause they do make a little noice when driving on paving stone and similar.

they will cause more road noise and a harsher ride quality
tbh you'd be best off with new ford top mounts
mines only having this because i'm fed up of having bump steer issues on my coil-overs (down 80-90mm) and also because mine will be a road legal track car so need more adjustability
