Default Couple of 4x4 questions (fuel pump & ISCV)

Afternoon folks......

As always I've had a search on here but there seems to be a mixed bag of answers and solutions.

So first question..

Once the cars been running 10/15 mins and getting warm the engine starts to surge...up to 2500 then back down to almost cutting out but just about saves itself before stalling...never cut out completely but becoming more frequent also while driving and pulling up to lights and juncions it's starting to surge.

So the ISCV seems to be the first port of call BUT which is the way to clean it??

Any other suggestions that a basic tool box can sort/investigate??

Secondly the fuel pump re wire, the cars a 92 4x4 sapphire cossie and as far as I can tell it's the original fuel pump and wiring.

I can do most things with a good guide/instructions so which kit for this would be most suited to me and my car??

Sorry to ask what seems to be a very common issue but I'm struggling to pick out the correct info for me.

Thanks.

MSD look like a good option, just spent 2hrs looking over there guides.

Is the standard pump this bosch 044 that's mentioned on most sites??

looks like replacing the fuel pump loom should be done as a mater of course not just something to ponder, also the alternator feed to battery looks to be a positive move (no pun intended).

The idle issue could be anything from a bad TPS calibration to an air leak.

Disconnect the idle control valve and see what happens.

I wouldn't replace the fuel pump if it's working, it seems pointless, a filter change is a good idea though.

Yes, rewiring is a good idea (along with the fans) and the said MSD (amongst others) sell looms.

In the case of the pump, the existing relay becomes a trigger for the new loom.

Good pun on the positive move!

Yes, my car improved no end when I changed the Alternator wiring. Where are you based? I have the proper tool if you need to make off new ends on the wires if buying the cable. You can get Cable from Vehicle Wiring products or car builder solutions and I THINK they can make the ends off for you if needed.

I'm in Derbyshire....Thanks for offer...

sorry, I didn't mean to replace the pump just a rewire and wondered what the original pump is referred to as I keep seeing "bosch 044 terminal ends" on the loom kits but have no idea of the make of mine.

I started it up, left until warm...but you guessed it..not a single blip or drop in Rev's.....A tap of the accelerator but still returned to normal revs...I did disconnet the iscv and the car cut out instantly.

Yes, that is a Bosch 044. As you are a fair distance away you can post me a cable and let me know the size end you want and I can crimp them on if needed.

What reads the lambda? Is it an after market gauge or does the std cossie ecu read it?

If the ecu needs it then yes you need a new probe.

From what I've seen paperwork wise it's a standard unit but I haven't actually been into the dash to look at it.

What sort of effect would this being broken have??

That is very good value!

Does anyone know if the Standard ECU reads that lambda probe?

I would change it out anyway, maybe it is causing some of the issue that the OP is experiencing.

As this is a 92 4x4 it would be a green top and the lambda sensor would be standard. I really don't know anything about the system as mine is a red top but I wonder if the ECU doesn't get a signal from the sensor if it doesn't just revert to open loop operation in which case the car would still run O.K. but the fuel consumption would be higher off boost. I am sure one of the tuners on here could confirm what the symptoms of a disconnected lambda sensor would be. As for the fuel pump - a Bosch 044 is a higher flow pump usually fitted when increasing the output with higher flow injectors etc. They usually just use loop terminal ends. As far as I have been able to find, the original terminals as shown in your photo (The ones you squeeze the two little tabs to release) are no longer available new, but you can also use the loop terminals on a new loom on the original pump (which I suspect yours still is.) Cheers David

Yes L8 (WITH the correct calibration will) this is the only difference between 'green' and 'red' top ECU's.

Earlier cars had the sensor installed and the others prior to this had the wiring installed.

I'm with you on this, i.e. it reverts to open loop.

As you say earlier models had the Lambda installed and some just the wiring, but I assume they all had the same calibration and so they just wouldn't be running C/L.

Like you say, it would be great to hear from Stu etc.

An update :

removed the ISCV, cleaned and lubricated then replaced next day.

What a difference, cured the issue and been good on every trip out since.

Thanks for the help.

that pic above isn't of a 044 pump thats a standard one, all 044 have unsleeved threaded wiring connections not sleeven threaded push on ones, although to add to the confusion some standard ones have the 044 wiring connections but not the other way round
