Default Cossie fuel pump rewiring

How many of u have rewired ur fuel pumps due 2 faulty n poor wiring.if so what is the best way 2 do it.Do u use the original fuel pump relay n where abouts do u earth the pump out at.Also has it been reliable since fitting the new wires.

If done correctly, and it is hard not to!!, they will be more reliable than ford wiring which can be up to 21 years old so does well anyway!!
If it were me I would run a new live wire/relay from the front to rear for the live, using original wire as trigger for said relay, then earth the pump inside the car somewhere at the rear as there is plenty of areas to get a good earth here, even if it means drilling a hole and using nut and bolt to hold terminal, as it can be easily hidden.

Yes you can do it that way, just check you have FULL voltage first to elliminate any dodgy connections that may be causing a drop.

Ive been all over lookin for 30amp cable n the best i can get is 27amp from halfords.Will this b ok

Don't need anything this heavy, 28/030 is plenty, 17.5 amp is plenty.

Well ive rewired the fuel pump n it still wont start.Ive took the power from the relay i used the black n red wire n put my new wire in off the black n red wire.Ive earth the pump out inside the boot wheel well n checked for a earth,When using a power probe with the earth wire plugged in the fuel pump my new live wire from the relay turns 2 an earth When i turn the engine over.At the fuel pump relay ive got a permant live(red wire) when crankin the engine the grey n blue wire is a live n the blue n green wire turns from a live 2 an earth when crankin is this right can anyone help please

Yes they may well be able to sdraw 22 amps(which I doubt), but it is NOT CONTINUOUS, the 17.5 amps is continuous rating, anbd would be PERFECTLY SAFE AT 22 AMPS ANYWAY for the amount of time it MIGHT draw it.

We i dont know what 2 do now apart from using a permant live n using a switch inside the car im really baffled now.Im gonna check voltage at the relay later on cause im pissed off with the car n im just gonna wait till i cool down a bit.

I used 37 amp the biggest you can get into a yellow crimp

Try vehicle wiring products you will need about 5 meters and Halfrauds don't sell it that long

Well ive got it all wired in but it still wont run.Is there any way i cud but a switch inside the car and wire up a new relay so that it can work and run.please help.

Where does the permant live to the fuel pump relay come from.does it come from the battery n what sud the voltage be(12v).Wud a faulty fuel pump cause the ignition live wire turn into a earth.

1. Is the original fuel pump relay's live feed getting 12V?

2. No, the fuel pump won't affect the output from the ignition live.

3. Have you tried replacing the original relay? If so, does it definitely work?

well im gonna have to check for a permanent live when i next look at it. what is the least voltage have to b for the pump to stop working..well ive got to relays for the fuel pump when the engine is cranking u can hear and feel the relay clicking.

Do you mean you have two relays? The original Ford relay then a second, then gets its live feed once the Ford relay's gone live? Which clicks? The pump needs to be getting the 12V or more matey, do you have any voltage at the pump's live feed at all?

Its just the 1 relay that clicks mate.Ive had another look tonight for about 30mins my battery is now about flat cause ive been trying n trying.Ive removed the relay n used a power probe n give my new wire (black n red) a live n the pump runs.i only had about 11 volts at the permant live wire at the relay cause like i said the battery is about flat now.So i know that my new wiring is ok will have 2 charge battery n try again.

I'm afraid you're losing me each time you refer to "the relay", do you have one or two?

Basically I just want to know if you have a good 12V supply to both relays and a working switched live to activate the relay. Do you know that? At least we know the pump works for sure now

The yellow relay clicks when the engine is cranking. Do u need over 12volts at the permant live wire at the relay cause i know my battery was going flat n it was reading about 11volts,but now the battery is flat.I would like 2 know where it gets its live feed from 2 the relay.Im gonna have 2 charge the battery n try again.

And I still don't know if you have one or two relays What is the yellow relay? Charge the battery up and see what you get, it's tricky to help from a distance, you have to be very clear about things matey.

Ive got 1 fuel pump relay which is a yellow one mate.I used 2 have a xr3i n i had a battery charging fault on that n the car n fuel pump wud still run till about 7volts then wud stop.im just wondering if the cossies r the same.

Default Cossie fuel pump wiring

This may or may not be helpful but worth checking: I have a problem with the fuel pump relay on my Saff Cossie that was there when I bought the car. Basically the fuel pump relay would not switch with the correct coil wiring (according to a diagram I'd seen) where the negative side of the coil goes back to a pin on the ECU. That was, strangely, unless you remove the ingnition relay then it would work fine! The idiot who had the car before me just jumped the coil switching wire straight to the main fuel pump wire to 'solve' this. I never got to the bottom of it really but ended up connecting the coil negative to the same point at the one for the ignition relay and it's worked ok ever since. I know that's not right though and really should look at fixing it properly. Anyway what i'm suggesting is you try it with the ignition realy out and see if your pump runs. If anyone else recognises this problem maybe you can post a solution?

Thanks for ur help mate ive had another look tonight cause i was talkin 2 a lad n he said ur fuel pump needs 2 have 12volts or over 2 run so i charged the battery. Its still the same so ive checked the wires again at the fuel pump relay.WHEN CRANKING THE ENGINE THE LIVE (RED)WIRE TURNS INTO A EARTH but if i use a power probe n give the red wire a live the car runs.Cud i not just run a permant live wire from the battery 2 the red wire at the fuel pump relay.Please help im getting pissed off with it now.

If in the above quote you're talking about a red at the original fuel pump relay (part of the management loom), then if this hasn't got 12V to it, then that's your problem. Check both management loom fuses located near to the relays with your probe. If neither have permanent 12V, then you've lost the feed from your battery. If so, then check the "fuseable links" at your battery - unwrap the tape on the wires that connect directly to the positive battery terminal for 8 inches or so and you'll find the joints which often corrode.

Yeh thats right the permant live wire(red)at the fuel pump relay(yellow relay)underneath the dash.When u crank the engine the live wire(red)turns 2 an earth.I might sound a bit think but what do u mean by fusable links n where sud there be. I did a continuity test on the permant live wire (red)n there was no resistance in the wire.Cud i not just run a new permant wire 2 the relay n cut from the battery n solder it onto the fuel pump relay without damaging the cars electrics.

Continuity isn't particularly helpful - it won't tell you the current-passing capability of the wire, ie if the wire is damaged

Have you got permanent 12V at the red wire ?

The fuseable links are simply smaller sacrificial bits of wire that connect to the battery, through which the fusebox, ignition switch, etc are fed. Undo the positive battery terminal wiring and unwrap the tape 8 inches and you'll see what I mean

The auto electrician came today 2 get my car running n he said that the fuel pump fuse holder was badly pitted so he has cut it out n put a new 1 in.Ive noticed that the fuel pump is running when the ignition is switched on but the car isnt running.I hope it doesnt do any damage 2 the car.
