Default FAO - Anyone who has restored a car Re Kurust

Basically I am restoring the underside of my RST at the moment. The plan so far has been to cut out and replace all the badly corroded areas which has been done.

There are other areas which are corroded (which I can't replace, i.e. spare wheel well) which I have cleaned up using a stiff wire brush attachment on a grinder, then use a Rust Eating product (i.e. Hammerite Kurust) and then use an anti-rust primer. I'm just worried that after all this hard work the rust will just come back through again??

n.b. the metal was fairly clean and silver but was still pitted.

Has anyone had any experiance with the above products and methods?? Did the rust come back again??

Sand blasting the underside of the car has been mentioned to me a couple of times. Has anyone done this? Is it something I can do at home in the garage (i.e. rent a portable sand blaster??) Is it a difficult job?

Hi John, ive heard a lot of people say that sand blasting isnt the best way to go as it gets into all the seams and thus removes most of the original seam sealer and no matter how much you re apply it doesnt get into the places it originally was and the car starts to rust from the inside out. Its only what Ive been told so not 100%. My friend brett has had his series 1 sand blasted so we will have to wait and see to see if it works out ok or not. As for the kurust my first project car was a mini and I did similar to what you have done, i.e. replace what you can and treat the rest, it lasted about 6 months before it came through again but that could of been my amatuer preperation work (was only 16 at the time). Not really helped you much there but thats been my experiences with the products/techniques you mention. I hope you have some success with it as you've put a hell of alot of effort i already. Fingers crossed for you mate

i would reccomend uisng jenolite rust remover as it contains an acid and seems to work far better than kurust, ive had problems with rust coming back after using kurust.

im gonna do the same thing as you to my "Rust-eS"s2,gettin as much rust away as poss,,then when shiny, coating straight away, with a metal cellulose primer,,not acrilic(water based),then gonna put some tetrosyl,,(drying type)black seal on,,(halfords sell it),,then a blast of stone chip gaurd,,hope you find a way yerself,,good luck..(ps im a painter by trade, the only real thing to stop rust as we know is new metal.)crimbo.

we got a home brew sand blaster and it just laughed at our compressor, apparantly you need a proper big compressor like the ones road workers use to supply enough air. You can rent them all together but some how I just cant see its worth while. It was someone local brett used, very local if im not mistaken (Fryston area), hes on nights at the moment so I'll ask him later today. They did do a nice job, I just hope it lasts. Wasnt expensive either. I'll let you know.

Cheers mate

I think i'm going to snad blast it

The reason i'm swaying towards doing this is if I don't remove the rust it'll come back rain or shine........if I remove it by blasting (and then coat the new metal well) then due to the fact I only plan on running it in the Summer / good weekends then it should last due to not getting wet (in theory).

Hi John, sorry for the delay. Wasnt as cheap as I thought it was for some reason. It was done by the Healey Centre in whitwood, they specialise in Austin Healeys apparantly. It cost Brett Ł240 for them to do it but 80 of that was for them to zinc prime it as soon as it had been done to prevent any moisture getting to the metal, so call it 160 for doing the bottom and under arches. Bit steep in my opinion.

Yep sounds about right, did they come out for that price or did he take the car to them?

trailered it to them, had to bung up any holes that would let the sand into the interior aswell.
