Default mk4 escort cab

hi,got a mk 4 1986 escort cabriolet ,years ago fitted a 1600 diesel to it, now need a new engine and cant get one, which petrol engine can i put in, not a fuel injection one as i changed the tank and pulled most of the wireing out for the diesel, i dont want a 1800 diesel engine as the costs of cambelts etc, and been 64 years of age want to replace it with a small engine i can easily fit and maintain. i would not mind a 1100 or 1300 engine petrol or even a diesel, Only going to do it all up and use very occasionaly has ive had the car 20 odd years.thank you

Your going to need to change tank anyway if its had diesel in it mate, personally id go for a silvertop zetec as its an easy enough conversion and reliable but if your intent on non injection then id go with a carb 1.6 cvh as found in xr2 and the like

thanks, its got nothing with it, ie starter, alternator manifold etc, but thank you for looking, would a 1.4 escort engine fit the gearbox, and can u pull the engine out of a cab without removeing gearbox, i did not last time but dropped everything with suspension, it neads a new front piece so thought of cutting it all away, pulling engine out through the front if it will cleargearbox shaft, im sure i pulled one out years ago and left gearbox in, thanks again

The cambelt kits should be pretty cheap these days, iirc the interval was 36k or 5 years so If you did fit a 1.8 diesel you could do the belts while the engine was out the car, then your good to go for a while.
