Default 1963 Mini Rust Bucket - Ted

Now that the Brown Bomb is complete it's time to get on with Ted, which was bought last year and has been languishing in the garage until today

As it arrived last year

Today the stripdown started

Errrrrrr

Grot

So bye bye engine

More Grot

That can go as well

Work commences on making a spit, just the brackets that bolt onto the shell to do

All the steel cost me Ł60

Spit finished

And some rusty bits to finish off

After sorting the Brown Bomb out for it MOT I made a few of the holes a little larger today

Mmmm messy

Panel list soo far

Floors
Sills (inner and outer)
Jacking points
Centre box
Scuttle
Valance
Heel board
Rear wheel arches
Boot floor and rear seat base
Rear bins
Wings
Front panel
Inner wings and A post
Door skins

Sounds like the Brown Bomb MK2

I just keep making the hole bigger

But fear not I have a cunning plan me lord

I had to adjust the new panel to fit the original floor pan a little better

And tacked up for tomorrow's re-fit of the rear subframe

Got a bit more done

And I made another big hole

Another noisy day down at the garage making the holes bigger again

But to start with, some obigatory rust pictures

Hole nearly ready for floor pan, just some trimming and cleaning up

Filled in a couple of holes

Then started making some more

Those holes just keep getting bigger

Mind you they do look better once filled in

So then you have to start making more holes

Coming next is this little mess

N/S/R wheel arch nearly ready to remove and boot floor repair tacked into place, the new panel was a nightmare hence the burn marks on it as I had to heat it up and reshape it

Dunno what wheel its is as it came with the car

Today I had a feeling of deja vu

Tacked in place

All welded up ready for flattening back

Nearly finished the underside now, just the rear of the boot, wheels arch closing plates and the valance to go

Cheers people, I'm trying to get the welding finished by the end of this month

The spec should be as follows

Visually the only change will be 4.5x10" steels

Mechanically its going to be fully adjustable suspension using the small coil springs that replace the cones, 7.5" vented front brakes, rear disc brakes and a modestly tuned 850 or 998 engine

Quality wark there, you really dont hang around do you. Do you restore these minis to sell? or for pleasure? What kinda cost to yourself is it for a full resto VS the resale value?

I do it as a hobby for myself (I work in IT), it costs from about 2k to restore a car but a restored MK1 is worth from 4k upwards depending on rarity, age, condition etc

This one will cost a little more to do due to the modifications that are planned and the fact KAD parts are very expensive, but I expect it to be valued about 5-6k once completed

Good on ya bulldog, get stuck in

I collected some more panels last night so I have all the metal to complete the floor and rear of the car upto the doors and make a start up front

List of panels still required though

2 front wings
Door steps
Top dash rail
Scuttle
Front grill panel
Rear bins

Also making mechanical plans now to include a GT15/17 on the back of the 848cc engine

I'd say it'll be worth more than 6k fnished! Seen MINT Mk2's go for 6k, standard! Paul Smith Minis are worth 4-6k....

Will watch this, I'm craving another Mini

Nice work mate, i'd love to be able to do as much bodywork as you on my Cortina. That's really top notch stuff. I've only just been shown how to Mig weld and i'm getting stuck in with it. Nice work
