I see what you did there with the 2021...LOL

It is coming back in May 2020 no matter what, Mark knows that and has said it will def be finished.

I am just about to buy a TIG welder and taking lessons so I can do work on my 944 and even might do little bits on the 205 as long as I am good enough by then not to ruin anything. The company selling me the TIG have offered some free basic lessons and then there is a company in Essex who do £140 per day group lessons. I am buying a decent quality TIG and probably a higher end MIG at the same time along with one of the new high end auto welding helmets.

I am still researching but I have been offered a discount on: Nuovo Fusion Pulsed 200AC/DC it is around £1890 inc vat and then some discount (they discount if you are subscribed to Urchfab on Youtube - well worth a watch he is building a track car with MX5 underpinnings)

https://www.inverterfusion.co.uk/TIG-Welders-s/140.htm

I have a Lincoln MIG along with a Clarke MIG.

As always the details are important, the only times I mentioned high end was about buying a high end auto helmet, I am looking at the £400 helmets (to me that is quite high end unless you add in the air fed stuff) and buying a NEW MIG (I noted that I currently have a Lincoln and a Clarke)

I also am replacing the Clarke as obviously they are the lowest of the low.

I am buying a TIG in either Lincoln or the Nuovo and I am under no illusions that these are still basic range models under £2.5k for a TIG.

The MIG I am looking to buy will be around £1100 so again, cheap when it comes to the proper stuff but decent compared to the Clarke MIG.

They said for me to go down and their tech guy will show me a load of machines and I can try all the decent welding helmets, once happy with what machine I think I want they will then set me up and show me all the basics. I can give you a shout when ready to go if you fancy a road trip or you can borrow my new set and see how you get on with it.

I am thinking either Esab A50 (around £300) helmet or the 3M Speedglass 9100X if anyone has any experience of them? Urchfab seems to mostly like the Esab but said it has flashed on him a couple of times and also he finds it a bit tight when doing cages to fit in the corners (unlikely to be an issue for me)

Thanks, I will take a look. I have single phase but I got them to add high amperage ring as I have the workshop ramps.

I think my biggest issue on the old clarke mig (apart from my lack of talent) is the inconsistent feed.

Yep my little sealey welder is the same, irratic wire feed speed that I've never fully cured, we only use it for tin it does the job

But my Oxford is a beast for all the reskinning and major repairs, mine was about £2000 but it's a monster

A smaller 200 amp Oxford is about £550 plus vat

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...=1582738478558

I've not tried a single phase small one, but my 3 phase is brilliant can't stress enough how good it is

I've got a real old school massive mig aswell which was my dads and does still work, IL get some pics tmrw pal you will crack up lol

Thanks for that, will take a look.

i love the big old fashioned farm stuff....I know a very wealthy farmer, he has old trousers he’d up with bailing twine and all his farm buildings look like they are about to fall down but he is rolling in it. He has some lovely old farm equipment, proper industrial and I am sure his tractor should be on antiques road show.

I dress like a tramp too its the farmers way lol
He must of made his money outside or arable farming as the returns aren't great anymore In relation to the asset value ie the value of the land
Money to be made if all owned but to buy a 300 acre farm now on a mortgage in the south approx £8000 per acre, plus barns and house and machinery so conservative guess say £3 million mortgage over 25 years, without interest that's £120000 mortgage payments per year
A 300 acre arable farm will struggle to net half of that in 12 months, it's not viable anymore sadly what a sad state of an industry.
Was much better years ago when my grandad bought some land then dad bought abit more, they paid of there land mortgage long before 25 years
I think it's sad when farmers are feeding the world yet a young man aspiring to be a farmer can't because it's not viable anymore :-(

do you find the snap on better then or just more handy?

i bought the Clarke about 6 yrs ago, it was good to learn on but now I can tell it’s limits etc. I hope that spending about £1100 on the new mig will be good enough for hobby stuff and the same with a £2k tig. I did toy with a second hand mig but spend the same to get something batter but you never know what problems it may have or why the seller is really selling.

No I spend most my time welding old cars so the snapon is better as can run it on 4 and is less heat on.0.8 wire ,the Lincoln is 271 so I'd run it on setting 2 to weld old steel but far better on thicker steel so its having the best of both worlds really my snapon is 23 years old ,the Lincoln is only 2 years old but a great bit of kit .I can fit 25kg wire in the Lincoln also where as the snapon is not big enough for that I dont own a tig but once iv done a few more cars il be getting one meself

I think he inherited the farm and then made a ton of money when a dual carriage way was built through his land back at a time when the land value was high and they compensated him well, he lived a very simple life, used to make me coffee with just fresh milk, heated on an aga and a blob of coffee, no water.

We have a max arc 300 at work it’s a right relic a big old beast but you can wind some serious heat into thick metal. It’s a very very good welder.

You call that a welder, this is a welder pal

And an enormous Ingersol Rand 1970s compressor, would cost a fortune that size nowadays

My 2 litre bottle of water on there for some scale

Toby I have a multi process thermal arc 181i fabricator , tig , mig , stick , the duty cycle is pretty decent for a small unit. Does everything I want for cars / workshop and was around £750 all in. You don't need a big unit mate I know a lot of very good welders and we have a lot of stainless steel control panel custom built and they use miller tigs and he really rates them. My other mate uses Lincoln tig but he said unless you water cool them they are not very good but when water cooled they are fantastic.
if you can wait a few months then seriously look at the new esab AC/DC rebel , multi process but with AC/DC so does mig , stick ,tig both AC/DC . It has self learning and smart computer where you can enter material , thickness and it works out the perfect amps , gas coverage etc. It has hf tig and you can even change the hertz to change the weld puddle , it really is a work of art and takes the welder to the next level. They are out in America so theres some YouTube vids so take a look. I want to do AC/DC tig so looking at one of these myself.
if not and want to go cheaper but are very good welders are rtech also worth giving them a look.
The sentinel helmet are meant to be good , it also has a grinding facility on the helmet.
also remember the new legislation on breathing in welding fumes , you should seriously look in to helmet extraction.

cheers paul

Thanks, I will have a look at the one you suggest.

i have not been a fan of "one does all" things as often they compromise somewhere but interesting to see. Will have a look at helmet extraction too, thanks.

i wasnt a fan but they all run invertor tech instead of transformers and they are a million times better.

yes mate you have to be careful when looking as they are all called the rebel but you would want the AC/DC one , I think they have the EMP before the model number. I've only found one place that is selling it in the uk so far but not really looked very hard. Engweld have it on offer but they are nearly 4K for the 205 model
