well its just been decided that were now heading to RAF Cosford tomorrow for the bike4life fest so it will be another 100 miles my car can rack up

thinking of upping the boost back to 23-24psi as its only at 20 atm with very good fuelling and no signs of det, but if its wet when we go then i wont bother as theres no way of testing it out

well we didnt end up going to cosford on the sunday, in fact didnt end up doing anything as i only went and did my groin in first thing sunday morning ouch

might get out in the car this weekend even if its just to go the gym and back sat/sun mornings, iv also been looking into some more additions to optimise and improve engine performance over this coming winter so keep your eyes peeled for them updates

going go for a larger rad possibly off the 1.6 diesel? then external oil cooler.

i have negotiated a deal for a proper genuine 27mm group A carb kit from france, and also talking to xenon about getting one of his mates programmable aei units

still toying with the idea of going for larger exhaust valves in the head but not wanting go for metro turbo ones as they seem to be a bit fragile

and all this will be done on the complete hush hush from the future wife whilst the car is in my mates garage all over winter

we then headed to scholar green to a little country pub for some dinner and a drink, car performed great didnt miss a beat just have to work the gearbox a bit more now due to the new spec turbo being a bit laggy, hopefully will be able to dial a bit of this out with mappable aei :agree:

they are very thin on the ground less than 500 on the road atm, but more are being restored and returned to the road lately which is a real good thing

bit of a boring update

weather depending we might be going to darley moor this sunday for the thundersprint event, if we do go were going go in the r5 again i said i want it to be used as much as possible this year and this would put another 85-90 miles on it

another update which is not so boring is that im toying with the idea of going for a full efi conversion on my engine but gotta wait on a couple of things before we can see if i can go for it

Hi mate, keep up the good work!

I owe two GTTs, one full EFI converted (Raider) and another (348) with carb and extra injector controlled with Megasquirt (still in the process of tuning it).
Would be happy to share experience on any matter...!

Just wanted to ask when you guys refer to 'needle jet', do you actually mean the 1.7mm needle valve http://www.ecas2cvparts.co.uk/float-...ze-p-1521.html sitting on the top of the carb which controls the amount of fuel in the bowl or am I missing something?

Actually what I ask is just for general knowledge as my case is that I try to set up fueling BEFORE boost (idling etc) and though my jetting is back to standard (will have to re-check though), I don't seem to be able to make it run leaner (it is at about 11 AFR when idling).

Many thanks!

hi mate cheers for that

im pretty sure iv always referred to it as the needle valve as thats what it is yes
enlarging helps get some extra fuel in the carb bowl when running higher boost.

onto your idling matter then it sounds like the rubber o ring on your idle screw which holds the idle valve has worn out (big brass one on side of carb) i had the same problem and tried many things and it turned out to be the o ring

Thanks for your advice regarding idling. Although I think the idle screw was replaced with a new one, I'll check that first again before going in too deep!

I think you may of misunderstood me.

Its not the mixture screw its on the same side of carb big brass screw head that you use a large flat head to take out
In there it holds the idle valve and on that should be a rubber o ring I would place a bet on its either worn or completely gone.

big update
as above i was really toying with the idea of going for the mappable aei unit from the french guys, but iv decided to go the whole hog and bin the carb and go for a full efi conversion

iv already been in contact with scoff from efi-parts with regards to fitting/mapping and am hopefully buying an already built up and prepped efi inlet from an rtoc member end of this month, i shall then gather parts as and when maybe one thing a month eg cossie fuel pump one month then vxr injectors next one etc.

scoff already does the efi conversion kit so that will be purchased through him along with coil pack and leads.

i really think my cars engine will be amazing with an efi conversion im not to fussed about peak figures more so a more linear power curve with much more low/mid range also much better mpg and turn key starting

After reading EVERYTHING regarding jetting, I've done the following:
-Replaced the main jet from 125 to 117.5
-Replaced idle jet from std 45 to 42 and also the o ring from the screw which was partially worn
-Replaced air corrector jet from 125 to 100

...and guess what? My issue running always very rich with no load (boost) is at last solved!

After letting it warm up, I've adjusted the mixture and the engine runs at AFR 14.7 at idle and 14.5 at 2500 RPM !!!!!

Now I can focus on adjusting fueling on boost with my extra injector driven by Megasquirt...

Thank you so much all you guys for the excellent advice and guiding

so iv now started to out a list together of parts im going to need to carry out the efi conversion

here goes

efi conversion kit from efi parts (ecu/loom etc)
efi inlet/tb/fuel rail set up from michael tierney
efi fuel pump either mk1 golf or cosworth
efi fuel pressure regulator
fuel swirl pot to be fitted in boot
throttle position sensor, air temp and water temp sensors from efi parts
wasted spark coil pack and ht leads from efi parts
saab red injectors
trigger wheel and sensor from efi parts

im hopefully going to do most of the fitting with help from others of all parts before it goes upto efi parts for mapping

if you guys can think of something iv missed off above then please let me know

thats good to hear mate

what boost are you going to be running? as if your running an increase in boost then you will certainly need to drill the 2nd stage out to 1.2mm to start then if more fuel is still needed try 1.3

Planning to go at about 18PSI but I hope my Megasquirt and extra 440cc/min injector will be able to take care of that.
I want to adjust the carb mainly for off boost, smooth engine operation and good mpg.

Concerning your EFI conversion, I think your list is ok, just wanted to mention that I owe 4 new red Saab injectors (0280155749) that should be fine for the case.

massive thanks to roy for sending me his pre welded trigger wheel set up for the cost of a pint at the next classic car meet

in other news i have now sold my old faithful workhorse escort van to ash (redoctober) as i now have a works van again so this means the 5 will be getting alot more

i have been out and about boosting the last 2 days and in fact went to do a cash in hand job yesterday in it, who said 5s cant multi task
had some fun on the way home and again tonight finished work and took the car for a quick 6 mile drive with a bit of spirited driving in places
had 2 lads in a golf r32 giving me big thumbs up and if my lip reading skills are upto scratch said "F'in nice mate" haha

all in all i cant get enough of the car atm really has that grin factor back on my face, i cant imagine how much better it will be when its converted to efi

got a quick pic of it parked up at the mrs's aunties which is where were staying tonight dogsitting

there isnt going to be one, just maintaining the mrs's motor and possibly getting a new one for us both next year, looking most likely to be a fabia vrs as it would suit the mrs as she does a 36 mile commute each day so 50+mpg and a decent bit of poke is a winner

Hi mate, any idea what exact turbo spec you had, and what the .63 turbine housing you had came from?

This one-

I just picked up a Raider, and it has the same .63 turbine housing (quite distinctive with the circular bit on the casting just after the inlet flange) but wondered what the hell the spec of my turbo is.

Pretty sure my compressor is smaller though, housing looks stock GTT size, and yours looks bigger I think?

I dont know if Andy is around any more buddy.

The 64 rear end is from a pulsar or late s14. In all honesty its a bit big for the carb fed c1j unless modified.

Blunty has the turbo machined up for him from Bernies Blowers.

Any pics of the turbo ? Any AR on teh cold side ? any model markings etc ?

the turbo i had on was the .63 t2 (the largest t2 rear) not the .64 t25/28 rear. it had a pulsar t28 turbine machined into it, it also ran a cosworth t3 comp housing with a billet t28 comp wheel similar in size to a pulsar t28.

yours will probably be a t2 hybrid from turbo technics as im 99.9% sure they did one with the 63 rear.
get a t25 or t28 front end on there and a larger turbine machined into the rear and you will have a turbo good for 230-245bhp on the little 1.4

absolutely love your car btw bet its a mentalist
Random thread resurrection, but I just looked at the MOT History checker website for my old 5 Turbo and it shows it was last MOT'ed in March 2006 on 98k miles, so it was still going a good 6 years after I sold it.

Anyone curious about their old car should take a nosey at this site:

Wise but sad move selling up the 5, would have bankrupted you like mine did to me! I went through 4 turbos, a couple engines and a clutch, and was trying to fund it on a student loan
