thinking of getting a Zetec-S mk5 some Q's
unfortunately i have had some very sad news this week, that my xr3i 90 spec will be a write off thanks to some complete idiot pulling out directly infront of me in a 50mph limit mainroad off his driveway.
i have decided i dont paarticularly want massive performance but something to match or be slightly better performance than the xr3i was, and im assuming the handling is simular...if not better than my standard xr3i efi.... any opinions welcome on performance/handling comparison.
anyway time to move on and im looking for a 2001 or 2002 zetec-s in mint condition original and mileage between 0 and 80k and have up to 2.5k to spend as i will want to opt for the 4-2-1 manifold and miltek exhaust system as ive heard they sound superb.
what is the difference with the phase 1 and 2 zetec-s? (i hear theres very slight differences between the early and later mk5 zs's)
and.....not seen it done on these mk5s at all but im thinking of some 7" cibbie spot lights for it but where would i get some brackets (are they availalbe or will i need to fabricate my own) ...im not double sure on this yet i guess theres only one way to find out, but i loved the way my xr3 sat with its spots on and will miss it. so im thinking this may remind of the old xr a bit
are they good engines the zetec se ? i hear they are yamaha devoloped heads is this correct? do they have Remote central locking and heated front screen options also?
thanks for any replies

go to www.zsoc.com , get all the info from there. im a member and have had nothing but good help from there, i have a phase 1 zetec-s , never had a problem with it its now 105,000 miles and as long as u get a zetec s thats been looked after and serviced regular it should be ok. major problem with the mk5 fiesta is rust, ( rear arches, door seals, rear light joins. have a look for a real good car and dont buy a cheap one as it may cost u a fortune to fix.

iirc the main difference was the engine, phase 1 was silvertop and phase 2 black top.
i think the wheels (maybe just centre caps_ were different, and a few other tweaks to bits of trim etc.
my mate used to have a ph1 and it managed to melt a piston, aparently fairly common???
hes now got a ph2 and he's not had a problem with it, its done over 100k now and runs like a dream.

phase 1 is a silver top, centre caps on alloys, phase 2 is a black top with a stronger bottom end . has no centre caps, has a darker interior . yamaha tuned engine and does go really well. maybe better to get a phase 2 as the phase 1 engines are getting on a bit now. and u can guarantee they have all been thrashed around no matter what phase u go for.

the mrs has got a phase 1 zetec s awesome little car handling in my opinion as good and will be a little quicker and reliable than the xr3 pretty good on fuel depending on how you drive it would reccomend them to anyone we bought ours with 34k on the clock and have been really impressed with it always run it on fully synfetic oil and it has done about 46k now only thing that went was the heater control vave and was 27 quid from fords

excellent thanks, thats what i wanted to hear, i will really miss the xr3i, its always been my pride and joy even over much more expensive cars ive always spent more time or pride on the xr3, shame gone now but i think the zetec-s remind me of it a bit, so i should get one unless a tidy rs turbo comes up for simular money

lol, yeah ive had mine off the clock mate, coming back from knockhill, had my friends golf gti turbo beside me lol. my car only has a magnex rear silencer and air filter, apart from that the car is standard,. dont mess to much with it if u get 1 , mate had 1 too, he had bluefin superchip and 4-2-1 manifold on his but still got beat by mine, . they are great cars for the money, handling is spot on and has a very nice prescence on the road, the bodykit as standard is still up to date with the newer cars the now. guarantee folk will look at ur car too.

imo keep the extior subtle ish, i think st170 centre caps set these off a treat, and the mesh on the bottom of the bumper and lowered then they look amazing

Listen for bottom end also check heater control valve and check thermostat housing. Rear archs and cills under door rubbers. Steering wheels wear in leather. Differences on exterior are front grill and wheels phase one metal grill phase two plastic wheels on phase one had large centre caps which you can swap for st170 ones and phase two had small centre bore caps. These are great little cars that go well and ate a very rewarding drive. I would recommend trying to find a non kiddy owned car as that way they've probably been looked after and serviced more regularly as bottom ends suffer badly from oil starvation. Go on the zsoc for lots more info
