Default Modified car not declared, what happens?

Was having a conversation about this the other day and have heard loads of conflicting story's about this so im asking for the correct answers if possible, not hearsay.
If you insure a car as standard then modify it without declaring the mods what happens in the event of a total loss claim.
Will the insurance be void and you won't get paid out.
What happens in this case if a 3rd party is involved.
How likely will it be that any mods will be noticed.
If you change the wheels for wheels from the same make of car but another model and don't declare it will this affect the insurance in the event of a claim.
Do things like tinted windows on the rear,a tow bar, quad headlights etc all come under 'modification' and therefore need declared?
For the record both my cars are standard as they are good enough for what I need them for as they are.
Ta,lee

If you have been sufficiently dishonest, I believe the worst case scenario is:

They payout the 3rd party (their obligation to do this is very strong)
They refuse to pay out for your car
They chase you for the cost of paying the 3rd party, and all costs incurred
You get reported for driving without insurance

And likely get nicked as well, the insurance company may well press for fraud / criminal charges.

So the possibility of being charged with fraud is another bonus you could potentially look forward to?
Seems saving a few ŁŁ by not declaring things is overshadowed by the ass raping you will get if you need to claim.
I'll be honest I've drove before without declaring certain things but not for a long time, older and wiser i suppose but you hear so many different story's about mods, insurance companies not paying in certain circumstances that it's always made me wonder if you do get away with not declaring things and claiming without a problem as the assessor doesn't know or care on the day.

I have literally just got of the phone from my insurers as its renewal time again
Last year I was paying 480 with no mods and for renewal they wanted 700! Gave them a call to declare my mods which have weirdly knocked my insurance to 314 so imo ya may as well declare them!!!

My insurance wanted an additional Ł380 because I told them I had changed the size of the wheels on my cosworth.
