Anyone here do running?
Im looking at getting into running.
baring in mind i've never been a fan of it, and i'm not really built for it, i reckon it'll be a good way of getting fit.
Any tips on starting distances to run or anything?!?!?!?!?
thanks

run a short distance in a lap, like your block or something, then just keep going till you get tired, this way you are never soooo far away from home that its silly! and you can increase the distance in laps as you go!

actually yeah... only a starter though
I run 2.5 miles 2 or 3 times a week (though not for a couple of weeks lol)
I chose a route I could (kind of) drive, so I could work out the distance our route is the same everytime, we havent changed it and time ourselves from start to finish, there is level bit slight up hill, steep down hill and V steep up hill (the last bit we usually walk pmsl
We have yet to beat the 30 minute barrier though

I too would like to do this. Going to join a gym at the start of feb after I get my Jan wage but was thinking I should start runing before then. Unfortunately I live in the dip of a long road so I have to run uphill no matter which way I go
Actually would like to drive down to Roundhay park and run round the lake as it's around 2 - 2.5 miles around but with getting out of work when it's dark I don't think it's a good optiona s I would either get attacked by a gang or fall in

NO trust me... I am in NO WAY the fittest person around, If I wasn't with my mate I would walk the whole lot or just stay in on here ROFL
the frist time we went I got half a mile and I honestly thought I was having a heart attack Im DEADLY serious
We slowed to a walk then jogged again etc etc
as time has gone on it HAS become easier, though when it is REAL cold and damp It is REALLY hard, I reckon it has summat to do with drawing in more moisture than oxygen or summat lol
I hate exercise ie running I find it realy boring, but lately its not been too bad... makes it better to have a "buddy" to go with though IMO... swimming is just tedious though IMO

i am a pti in the army and i do this sort of stuff all the time, running is ok but it is the one you can make so many excuses not to do
swimming is the best if you can do it with any grace and distance
taking a long walk is just as good as a run and less damaging especially if you got some hills
unless your training for something specific then cyclin i find is very good for heart lungs and stamina, not so boring and so many diffo types to do
as for in the winter it's worse your right it's the cold air and moisture on your lung alvi

i am a semi pro boxer and i run alot, i found that running in the street causes problems to your joints in your legs due to constant up and down roads ect ,the best thing is tread mill and an exercise bike, and eating heathy ie fish salads ect not to much carbs unless you intend to burn them off i waight 14 st now but want to loose an other stone for next fight, so i am pushing my self at mo, if you are not fit at all the best thing to do is do a bit of exercice a day as long as you work up a sweat ,and dont eat shit, if i was you i would start off the exercise plan by having long and hard sex with my misses every nite then after 2 weeks ov that hit the tread mill pal and bust it out lol.

running on a treadmill is sooooo boring though.
all you do is think about how hard it is rather than how well youre doing or how far it is to end of the road.
but as said... trainers... very very very important. run in your normal regular ones just the once and you'll kill the next day and think it was the running.... it wasnt it was the trainers! lol
IMO dont need to be mega expensive ones - just the right design, quite strudy suits me with a thick rigid sole. I paid £30 for my puma cell or whatever they are called. and apart from a blister after doing the great north run they have been pretty good.
the fashion tennis puma spiked things I normally wear for the gym kill me if I run in them any distance.
agree with trying to find a lap to do and driving it - I done exactly this.
had a few courses....
one was 1.5 mile... and depending how I felt did up to 4 laps.
another route was 3.5 miles there and then I run back so 7 in total. used to take just under an hour.

In the weather that you are having in England I can't explain how important it is to warm up properly before doing any type of exercise.
This will seriously decrease the chance of you damaging a muscle etc.
Upper body strength will help your running a great deal. So doing situps and pressups will be of great benefit to you.
Pick a number that you are happy with (say 15) to do and then have a rest and then do these in repititions.
Say on week one that you will do 4 sets of 15 each night of situps and then 4 sets of pressups. Then on week two you will do 16 in each set.
Getting fit is about many things from what you eat, when you eat, how much sleep you get etc.
As Damo has said. If you can find a friend to go running with then that will help a great deal as you are less likely to walk and more likely to push yourself.
If not then I find that putting some tunes on your mp3 player that get you going really helps.
I listen to old skool like Ratpack (waits for the piss taking ) and that gets me going.
Pick an interesting route to go. If that means that you drive to the park and run round cos the surrounding are you live in is crap for running then do it.
Write on your calendar when you exercised as it will make you guilty if you haven't gone out for a couple of days.
Make a chart of your results and run times. It makes it all seem worth it if you are doing more of the exercises and the run times are getting quicker.
Not saying you have to but I take a multi vitamin and cod liver oil tablet each day. Probably just a psychological thing
As for running trainers , there's no need to spend £80 on a set of expensive trainers that might not be designed for running.
Asics are a very good make of running trainers and not expensive either
Lastly. I cannot emphasise how important a real good stretch off after you have exercised is. This can make a hell of a difference as to how sore you may feel later on or the next day
Stretching doesn't have to hurt as a little makes a big difference.
Hope this helps a little
