Default Boiler Question........

What sort of temperature should the Boiler be set to for the Radiators?

Does it vary for time of year?

Aint actually got central heating so aint sure, but wouldve thought you have a set point for your hot water about 50-70 degrees but seeing as you have a Beccy (woman) would guess it would be on the higher side lol
The temp of the rads would be controlled by a room thermostat I would think, that you would just set to a point that you feel comfortably warm at, or ref my first point where Beccy feels warm and you are roasting
dont know what other actual boiler settings you mean in that case

Well, here's how our Heating system works.......

Our Boiler has a Digital Temperature setting which I assume controls the Temperature of the water that goes to the Rads.

We also have a Room Stat that controls the Temperature that the Heating Fires.

Each room has a Thermostatically controlled Radiator Valve.

Our Room stat is set to control the Temperature to 22°C during all the time that we are about. The Radiator Valves are set according to how each room feels.

The Boiler is currently set to 80°C (with a maximum of 82°C that we could up it to)

However, the heating struggles to get to 22°C. It does get there, but not easily. Having said this, we currently have lots of stuff not quite right, like bits of floor out, a couple of rooms without doors etc.

I just wanted to make sure that having the Boiler on its Maximum setting isn't harmful.

Dont think it can do any harm, mean you got another 2 degrees to go yet anyway lol

But will just cost more to keep it that hot

What about your hot water comming out the taps wouldve thought that was going to be the 80 degrees, which in reality is a bit hot (scolding risk if young kids in the house )

Dont know why the rest of the house wont heat, probs as you say you are trying to heat too much of each rad with missing doors. The rads should be specced to the size of the rooms they are to heat just not ones that look right lol. the temp of the water flowing round them should affect how quick they actually heat to the desired temp, but once that reached the rad stats should stop the flow of water round them to stop the temp getting unbearable.
The fact yours arent doing the job of heating even tho you got a temp of water flowing round them way in excess of what you would want suggests undersize rads compared to the area they gotta heat, which could be down to the missing bits.

One thing just crossed my mind espescially if the water comming out your taps isnt rediculously hot, is what is the digital stat reading celcious or faranheight ??? 80 degrees farenheight is only 26.5 degrees centigrade

BTW, we have a separate adjustment for Hot Water temperature, which is actually set lower than the book suggests. I don't see the point in the Hot Water being ballistically hot.

Also, its me that feels the cold more than Ms B!!!

Oh well that was the end of my expertise on boilers

BUT if Mrs B is "HOT" (your words not mine well more or less ) sure you could work out other ways to keep warm

CheeRS Tiff.

Main thing I was worried about was whether its unusual to see the Boiler set to 80°C to get the house to 22°C this time of year?

if you have the boiler set to max and runing all day it wont hurt it at all as you boiler if i remember right is a modern combi, it will run at max gas rate till it gets near its high temp then it will cut the gas rate down ( use far less gas) to keep it at the high temp. but if you are still cold then that means that you havent got big enouth rads fitted or you have got a lot off heat loss from your house, hope this helps

Yes, its a Vaillant Turbomax Plus.

I'm not going to panic too much about Rad sizes etc yet, as we have alot of places where heat could be lost.

As long as the Boiler isn't going to self destruct, thats good news!! LOL.
