Default wireless networking

My basic question is:

Can I plug my Cable Modem into my Wireless Access Point?

The kit I have is Intel 2011 stuff, I have a wireless card in the PC and another in my lap top. The Access Point is a stand alone unit with one Ethernet connection on it.

My PC will connect to the AP and I have setup a wireless network

is ya cable modem ethernet or USB?

if ethernet then yes, if USB then the main comp will have to act as a gateway

but im assuming its ethernet otherwise the wirelss would be slitely pointless lol

alex yes it will work... BUT...

most cable companies lock your connection to a specific mac address (every ethernet device has a different mac address)

so when you unplug the cable from your PC n put it on the access point it WONT connect you to the service n give you a connection

you'll probably have to ring them up n get them to add the mac address manually before it will work... as the only way i know to enable the connection is fill in a WEB BASED form... n since you cant browse the internet from the AP itself (well you might but i doubt it) you'll struggle...

altho thinking about it you MIGHT be able to do the webbased form thing on your PC via the access point as long as the AP gives you the sme IP addy... hmm... maybe this is easier than i thought

oh well nevermind ignore what i said, and just be aware ythat you MIGHT have trouble setting up the conenction for the 1st time you plug it in, and you MIGHT have to ring em up to get it working.

Arr thats a good point...

I've got the computer and the wireless AP on the same network (I think, how can I test this?!).

But when I plug the Cable Modem into the AP nowt more happens!

you'll notice that if you reset the cable modem and the AP then the AP will be given an IP address, but it wont be a genuine one connected to the internet... it'll be on the cable companys internal network, and any webpage you visit will automatically forward you to the signup screen (where it adds the mac address to your account)

try this... in this order:

1) plug cable modem into access point
2) reboot cable modem
3) reboot access point
3) reboot PC (the PC by the way must be set to use the AP as its DHCP server)

then try getting on a web page n HOPEFULLY you should see the cable companies signon screen...

you dont use ICS if you're using a wireless access point/router

thats a point tho... does the AP have routing built in? if it doesnt then it wont work anyway :P
