cyprus
anyone been to cyprus or surrounding areas at all? I have never ever been and would like to consider going in 2007 (going to ibiza next year)
thing is i guess i have been blinkered by going to spain in different areas for so many years now.
Where would you recommend? Is property cheap out there? Is the language easy to speak? Any help appreciated
thanks

Cyprus is the bollocks. Well the Greek Southern part, not the NorthEast bit owned by greasy pervy Turks
Everything is daft cheap compared to here barring chocolate for some reason.
Most people speak good english anyhow, even in the non-tourist bits.
Go to pretty much any food shop and they got the same stuff they sell in the UK.
If was me id want to live in or around Larnaca where most my family live, its big but you still got shithot beaches etc etc too, and is only short drives to the rest of it anyhow.
Tis hot, looks lovely, warm clear sea (that clear you can watch fish swimming underneath you!), etc etc etc.
I defy anyone to be able to drown their either, the sea is so salty you could probably still float if you had lead weights tied to your feet.
Some shit-hot fast cars out there too.

Moving out there to live in December...
Its cheaper than UK for booze and fags, and local produce is cheaper, but other stuff, well anything imported is pretty pricey...
My folks live in Pafos (Paphos) and have done for the last 5 years, they love it, and I am looking forward to living there...

One of my aunts has lived in Nicosia for more years than I can remember, now speaks fluent Greek and owns a nightclub there (although I think she's more of a silent-partner in it these days).
Nicosia itself is bloody hot during summer-season, as it's right in the centre of Cyprus so gets no sea-breeze......Paphos, Protoras, Paralimni, stayed in each of them, all nice and quiet (not sure Paphos is as quiet these days, it was about 10 years ago I was last there).
Greek's supposedly quite an easy language to learn to speak, but not to read...
If you know where to look, food/etc is amazingly cheap......when we were in Nicosia, my aunt took us down some dingy-looking alley into what looked like it was someone's front-room converted into a small cafe (and it was, she said). They didn't speak a word of English, so my aunt did all the ordering and translating, but we ended up having a 5-course Meze (buffet, of sorts) with 2 bottles of wine for Ł15 total, and the food was absolutely gorgeous!
