One of my aunts has lived in Nicosia for more years than I can remember, now speaks fluent Greek and owns a nightclub there (although I think she's more of a silent-partner in it these days).

Nicosia itself is bloody hot during summer-season, as it's right in the centre of Cyprus so gets no sea-breeze......Paphos, Protoras, Paralimni, stayed in each of them, all nice and quiet (not sure Paphos is as quiet these days, it was about 10 years ago I was last there).

Greek's supposedly quite an easy language to learn to speak, but not to read...

If you know where to look, food/etc is amazingly cheap......when we were in Nicosia, my aunt took us down some dingy-looking alley into what looked like it was someone's front-room converted into a small cafe (and it was, she said). They didn't speak a word of English, so my aunt did all the ordering and translating, but we ended up having a 5-course Meze (buffet, of sorts) with 2 bottles of wine for £15 total, and the food was absolutely gorgeous!
