Weirdly I'd like to be a PE teacher or a Policeman... I couldn't justify the paycut right now but maybe in the future or when I retire from city stuff.

I know people who have done it and its been a BRAVE decision but they have always been happier (apart from Sean! and I told him he was doing the wrong thing!)

Have you got alot of commitments and responsibilites?

And to be really helpful (and nosey ) ... whats do you do now and what do you wanna change to?

Just commited to the running of the house and an addiction to rallying and cars in general, no kids or anything.

Currently a mechanical engineer in nuclear shite but no idea what I fancy doing, opportunities aren't exactly endless up here.

Yes, for the first seven years of my career, I was a Lloyds claims broker. The only thing I miss is the fantastic food we used to get at lunch-time and obviously the fun (girls ) and socialising you get in a big office. That was nearly ten years ago, and I couldn't go back to all the bollocks that you have to put up with being a "cog" in a large company - office politics sucks and I was always too mouthy for the directors .

Think you've hit the nail on the head there Mike, cog being turned by a chain of pr1cks. Didn't get into engineering to deal with petty politics.

Why not look into some night school classes or college/uni courses, you may find some inspiration there.

Gave up a career as a mechanic after serving my apprenticeship and 6 years in the trade. Now I'm a sales advisor for a massive bathroom showroom just outside Bristol.

Not a day goes by where I don't miss working on cars and wondering what I could be doing instead of sitting behind a desk having to be nice to a complete asshole of a customer.

Problem is I had to quit the spanners because it wasn't paying the money I needed to get a mortgage and first house. I'm on nearly £20,000 a year more now and just could not afford to take that kind of a pay cut to go back.

The only way I could get this kind of money as a mechanic would be if I worked for myself but am not in a position to make that kind of commitment at the minute and won't be for a long time.

I'm really happy with my job, but I'd love more money.

But my standard of living is OK, so it seems pointless chasing more money when I could end up unhappier. Think job satisfaction is worth more than a bit of money.

But if it was a lot more money I could change my mind

Have to admit I envy city jobs like Porkies

I gave up 8 years of City life to start up on my own doing Signwriting. Now expanded doing car alarms and have just taken delivery of a Limousine to do a bit of chaffeuring! I miss the nice easy pay packet from the City but its not a touch on being able to work for yourself!!!!!

Depends on ya situation i know when i speak for myself (and prob Benn 304R) when i say stuff job satisfaction gimme the ££££

Every month is living on the bread line, robbing peter to pay paul etc...

I'm in a prob not bad-ish paid job with all the trimmings that come with working for a govenment department but the job satisfaction is nill. And the prospects within the Co are even less, in fact none.

But its catch 22, i can't up and leave because i have a mortgage and all the debts that go with it, bills etc... but i so desperatley wanna do something else but the responsibility is keeping me here

All i wanna do is become a sparkie, but when ya told your to old now - thats great motivation for ya

I'm willing and able to do anything to earn more £££, even got my HGV Class2, but no one wants ya unless you got experience

I'd throw in the towel tomorrow if the right thing came up.

I'm actually looking for something at the moment that gives less job satisfaction but a higher salary.

Seems crazy, but I am easily motivated by money, and really enjoy my outside interests, but I have a habit of wanting to live well beyond my current means!

I'm just viewing a career as a stepping stone to something bigger at the moment!

Definitely mate.

Ive been doing IT contract work, that came to an end so I decided to try and research what I really want to do, which is learn a trade, take a massive pay cut etc while Im still at home, sell my car etc

Thing is no-one seems to want to train anybody (at least in my area and cos Im 24) and all the careers centres etc can't seem to give me any useful advice!

Even the job centre seem to think all I want to do is sign-on when I go there, when all Im doing is looking for opportunities, nightmare!

I agree 100% there....

After i left uni, i had 5 years of bouncing from job to job desperately looking for inspiration. My initial thought was to chase the cash, but after seeing how miserable you can be even though you have a large wallet really pissed on my parade.
In the end an oportunity came up for me to work for myself, and i jumped at the chance. The work is piss easy, the hours are completely up to me!
Ok the wage aint brilliant, but im comfortable and if i want something then i can usually afford it.

But the best part of working for yourself is the freedom.....
Take today for instance..... I went over to the unit i work from with the intention of putting in a couple of hours.......i get there, open up and get everything ready, when my phone rings.

"Chris, its sean........you hungry?? Cause i'm starving"

"Alright sean......yes mate im starving.....brekkers??"

"Aye pet!! Ill be there in 10"

And that was my day at work....... Spent the rest of the mornin in Subway, eating a foot long!!!

My advice, Find something that you are happy doing and that earns you enough to survive........no stress, no hassle.......believe me lifes too short to piss it away in an office.

great thread... I left a Job 5 years ago in sales, I was on circa 30k at the age of 22 and if I was still there would be on 40-50 EASY, bumped into a guy i used to work with a bit back, he earnt 60k last year ... BUT it was boring and I mean BORING and as above, you had the usual arseholes whom you simply HAD to deal with to earn a crust Same old story too, I had money coming out my ears, but I had to limit the amount of time I spent out on the beer of a weekend, as thats when the money was to be earnt PLUS I worked every single bank holiday of the year except Xmas day and easter sunday!!, Had to no holiday time allowed during promo time etc etc

I jacked it in an threw a load of money at starting my own business working on cars.... its been good and bad (lately though the money has become shite)... sometimes I do wish I was back on that shop floor scratching my arse all day .... then earnin silly money on the weekend, but then I remember the fun Isometimes have (pennyless) on alot of weekends now plus I dont have to pander to customers

Used to be a Driver and Filleter for a Fish Merchants, not the most glamourous of jobs by any margin (4.30am starts latest) but the money was very good, the perks were decent (discounts on restaurants and hotels)
But alas, i got fed up with the job, the management and the company,
I went to the local council and applied for my Private Hire Licence, bought myself a Toyota Avensis TAXXXXXXXIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII and went on my jolly way,
Yeh i work 7 days a week (50-60 hours) I work bank holidays and xmas but i have no kids, dont watch much telly,
And i still manage to live well, eat well, drink well and get abroad 3 times a year.
In my job you take out what you put in,
And in 2 years i have cleared a £50k debt

And if i sleep in, or have a hangover, theres only me that loses out and no boss to creep to
