Default Bonnet pins...does make make a difference?

Hi peeps...just wondering whether the different makes of bonnet pins make a difference? are there any differences in the cheap one and the mor expensive ones?

i need some as my bonnet opened on me on the A40 last night

reason for asking as i know there are some Ripspeed ones laying around at work that i can have but dont want them to let me down etc...

thanx

also does anyone know if there is a common problem with the catches/cables on these as i have heard numerous stories of the bonnets opening without warning...

i was only doing about 60mph as well!! glad i werent doing any more as the damage could have been alot worse!! only got away with badly bent bonnet, scuttle panel damage and a cracked left vent...

Bit of a common problem mate, happened to me a few years ago.

It's uaually due to a tired lock and melted bonnet cable not letting the lock slide fully back when you shut the bonnet

get a new lock/catch and the correct adjustment and that's all you'll need

happened to me a couple of days after i bought my s2... was a prob with the catch, the cable kept catching on a kink in the cable, which held the latch open... everytime i shut the bonnet i made sure the latch on the slam panel was fully closed before i lowered it...

did the same damage, as well as a smashed windscreen

proper scares the shit out of you, trying to slow from 60 whilst lookin through a gap tighter than a nuns ass

I changed the lot, catch, cable and lock, about Ł30 worth if I remember rightly. I did the same last year too as a pre caution.

Don't know about makes of pins mate, don't like them personally, I made my own catch that goes round the engine lifting eye. Not ideal, but does the job and you can't see any difference with the bonnet shut.

My mates S2 bonnet use to keep popping without warning, so he fitted pins to his. Then shortly after that mine popped on the M11 - luckily both of us were lucky and we never had it fully lift, but I still didn't like it so I fitted a set of pins aswell.

I only used a cheap pair made by RACERX or something - cost about a tenner. Ally bolts, very lightweight. Took all of half hour to install and for the piece of mind it was worth it

We ONLY ever fit stainless steel ones.

If it were just a road car we were doing I'd go for a secondary cable located under the bonnet (as TT has done).

Tony - your engine is looking mighty tasty there son

I saw a secondary cable set up once before a few years ago - think it was JasonP's old track liveried S2? Seems like a good idea - I just don't like the idea that the bonnet is still able to pop tho, I prefer mine to be shut dead - no way of it opening unless I undo both catches

I thought the point of bonnet pins is to remove the locking mechanisms altogether - so you can whip the bonnet off sharpish - or am I totally off the mark.

In motorsport Tigran, yes.

But modded cars sometimes suffer either through age, or poorly fitting/fitted intercoolers etc. As the cost of a repair is soooo expensive its a small price to pay for the added piece of mind.

I'm gonna replace the cable on mine - the latch is working fine but the cable isn't engaging/disengaging properly.

It's on my to-do list
