It will cause the main input bearing on the gearbox to wear out !!!
This is because the input shaft will move laterally by the clutch weight.

Happened on my car once

You need to change it! Snapped input shafts or collapsing gear box bearings are order of the day otherwise!

most local engine shops have them tim , its the same along all the 2.0 litre pinto range, if you need to get a good one out of a crank here is a way to do it without damageing it, you need plenty of grease and a bar the same diameter as the centre of the bearing, pack the bearing with as much greas eas it will take , then , line your bar up to the centre of the bearing and hit it hard with a hammer, the grease will act hydraulicly and force the bearinf forward if you got enough effort in it - sound difficult - its a peice of piss !

but the bearing had collapsed and its only the outer case thats stuck in the hole.this was why my car wouldnt go in to gear at the proflex i suspect, the gearbox would still be spinning with the clutch in due to the bearing grabbing the input shaft.

Yep!! it really is that easy!..

Tim, it's still worth trying even if only the shell is left.. get a bar that is a good fit in what is left - failing that it's a chisel. But definitely fix it, it WILL damage the box at some stage otherwise..
