I'd do a full HPI check and probably speak to the DVLA about it before parting with any cash.
has it been sold on without being swapped over to the new owner, there's another V5 somewhere in the new owners name ? If it's one previous owner then it's on it's second owner. Does the issue date on the blue V5 match the date of first registration ?
could be a legit reason or it could be otherwise.. maybe that's why it's so cheap for an FRST in great order..

Maybe I'm being over cautious here but doesn't that process involve contacting the named owner on the V5 and asking them if it's ok to give a new V5 to you as the new owner ??? and since you have no idea who that is what if they say no ??
Will DVLA tell you who the current name is on the V5 they have on record ? probably not due to data protection..
Why not get the current owner to apply for the V5 themselves then once they have it in their name you can buy it and go through the normal process of buying / selling a car with no risk.
I guess it might add an owner but 2 or 3 owners on a car that old is not going to make any difference to it's value IMO. Better than having it taken away due to something dodgy coming to light once you've parted with your hard earned...

Does anyone remember the reason they changed the log books to the new red ones? It was because thousands were stolen from the printers and dodgy people were using them to sell stolen cars. There was adverts everywhere warning people not to purchase a car with the old style logbook from a certain date. The car could be in someone else's name and u buy it and then the original owner wants the car back. He could be pulling a scam that his mates got the red log book in his name and he'll sell it to u with the blue log book and then a month later his mate will report "his" car missing and you'll end up with no car and no money. Trust me I know a few dodgy people who carry out this scam on a regular basis (there not friends just people I know through motor trade) and they make a fortune at it. I bet when the shit hits the fan the phone call u made to dvla won't mean anything. Just trying to help. They also list the cars really cheap to draw people in. Did he put about the logbook in the ad? I bet not. I have a mate at work who lost Ł6500 on a mini convertible through this scam

What does that RAC check tell you ?
scrapped
Stolen
plate change
colour change
cat C or D or whatever..
outstanding finance
None of these things are answering the question you need answered..
Does it report the number of previous owners ? does that match up with what you know ?
Get a reciept for sure but if it's not his to sell that's not gonna help if the 'real' owner turns up wanting his car back. Even if he gets done for selling 'stolen' property you're left trying to recover your costs through the small claims court against someone who might be inside or suddenly has no money to their name thus paying you back at a pound a week for next 20 yrs.
Personally, bargin as it seems, I'd walk away and it's not like it's 5 mins up the road is it...
For me the seller having the V5 in their possesion and in their name is an absolute must or I walk. Plenty more fish and all that..
Down to you at the end of the day if you travel and get a good or bad feeling aboutit when you're there.
Best case is you waste money travelling, worse case your 3 large out of pocket.

Dvla has just said he hasn't got the red one because he hasn't changed it into his name! They said soon as I buy it I will be the owner with the red log book and the previous original owner will be informed I have purchased the car ! All a ok

What are you not understanding??
He has not changed the car into his name, he is not the registered keeper......
Your buying a car in a private seller off someone who is not the registered keeper! the registered keeper will have a red log book!
He may / may not own the car - why not put a deposit down so you only lose a small amount and secure the car whilst he becomes the registered keeper or runs away with your money...
The car not being reported stolen is of no consequence, it may be his mates who has the red book and they may be splitting your money 50/50 and calling the police to get the car back by reporting it stolen!
The Blue Log Book is NOT worth the paper its made from as thousands of unprinted log books got stolen!

v5 means almost nothing
its simply a reference tool for dvla to hold somebody responsible fro the tax and any incidents it may be involved in
if you carry out due diligance[hpi check, physically check numbers etc] you have done all you can to buy it properly
even if a previous owner say no to the v5 question letter they will issue unless he can provide evidence he owns it or has had it stolen-as they have to have somebody responsible for it

Guys he is so dead set on buying this car nothing said will change that.
I can completely see why he feels that way but in my opinion I would be asking a hell of a lot more questions. Where is the person that is on the logbook. What's the full story. He must know that person no?
To me it's a gamble with a substantial amount of money. If it was me I would walk away if I could not have some information or be able to talk to the person on the logbook. and believe me I would but that car on a heartbeat.

I'll keep you posted if I get shafted!
We sell cars every day with the old style V5. Makes no difference. Probably just never received the newer version from the DVLA - we hear this an awful lot. Just check with the DVLA that it's not one of those stolen ones - they have listings of all the serial numbers and will happily tell you either way. And as lomng as everything else checks out, you should be fine.
Everyone in UK got sent out the replacement red v5 so if he hasn't got it then who has? The cars registered in someone else's name, so who's saying the cars even his to sell? All in all I'd say to him if he can get a red log book from dvla then you will definitely buy it, no ones gonna buy an Rs ford without it so it shouldn't sell in the meantime. you'll soon find out if he's a scammer when u never hear from him again! If u do hear from him and he's got it then happy days
