Default Aquitting?? Anyone been convicted of this?

My mate stopped outside the travel agents today quickly to pop a form in there when he came out a policeman was in his car door turning off his engine
And then asked if he wanted a £50 fine for "aquitting" asking the copper what this ment he informed it ment leaving a vehicle running and not being in it??
After the said copper couldn't find his aquitting book he was let off with said crime!
Anyone else heard of this or was the copper talking out his arse??

Road Traffic Act offence is 'quitting' I believe - leaving car unattended on public road with engine running. People have been occasionally prosecuted for it, often when leaving car to defrost but not on their own driveway

Bet if he'd had a dodgy battery, your mate would have really been grateful to the dibble there

the crime is being mongaloid enough to leave a car with keys in the ignition in this current world.

What was he thinking?? if it gets nicked hes not insured. cop did him a favour.

Or maybe he just dropped something into the travel agents that took less than 10seconds plus it was only the crapy work van!
I think the copper must have been bored

To be fair I'm quite impressed a policeman knew a law to ticket other than speeding

10 seconds is all it takes for a motor to be gone, crappy work van or not I'm sure his employer wouldn't have been impressed.

Barring the said offence, it's common sense not to leave it running, it's a perfect chance for an opportunist thief!

If he did it in Glasgow, the Council would take £20 off you for having the engine idle uneccessarily, even if you are in the vehicle at the time.

Sometimes, being in the vehicle isn't enough to stop the opportunist thieves either!

Unattended vehicle engine running, mate got done for it years ago for sitting on the bonnet in the freezing winter chatting to one of the boys with it running.
Seemed a bit childish to me but I get the running into a shop bit with it running, the argument is if a kid jumps in etc blah blah blah.
Pay the fine and move on.

he left his motor parked on the street with the engine running with no one in it and went shopping? I didn't realise you still got plain old stupid people nowadays. I thought they all had disorders to explain/excuse it

My brother got 3 points and a fine for this a few years ago.
He was a salesman and on a test drive the trade plate fell off the back of the car, he stopped and nipped out to pick them up - a matter of feet behind, the car was an auto and started to creep, dibble came by and booked his ass! Stupid momentary mistake taught him a lesson!!

I think it is fair enough to give him an ear bashing or ticket. Scummy chav takes it for a spin, best case police resources are wasted in a stolen vehicle report, worst case the chav goes tearing through busy streets and causes damage or worse.

There is zero need to leave it running.

Not an offence.
It's a design feature.

Unless the keys, keyless fob or card are in the car the engine will cut out if the revs increase beyond tickover.
