Default Cross Flow running problems

Hi been having problems with a 1300 mk 2 escort engine running rough and not accelerating beyond 35MPH, fitted a new fuel filter and ticked over brilliant sounded great, old filter was Black......Took the car out for a run yesturday and still didnt feel right, tick over was fine but as soon as it drove about 1/2 a mile it lost power then sounded as if it wasnt firing on all cylinders very very lumpy, so i thought it may well be a bit of rubbish in carb maybe, so took it a bit further where it eventually just died on me, no power at all and would not even rev. towed the jeep home and going to have a look tonight. The only things i checked last night was the simple ones first distributor cap, and rotor arm which are as new, HT leads which are on fine, however from past experience even new ones fail.
Thought i would take carb off and give a jet through just in case its blocked. also give the air filter a good clean/wash.
Oil is fine and water is fine, just wondering maybe piston seals but no knocking noise.
Hoping its just the carb that needs cleaning.
Its a 1300 crossflow engine from a Mk2 escort. If its not the carb and before i go stripping it down further has anyone had anything similar?
Looking on net it mentions the coil or maybe the distributor vacuum...

cheers

Stu

Are you running points and condensor or has it been converted to electronic ignition?

Its been converted to electronic ignition, distributor cap and rotor arm are as new checked them last night, not checked the spark plug gaps yet though and the HT leads are new.

check the H.T coil is the correct one for the ing amp ie is its meant run with a ballast resistor or not,and that its not breaking down under load, offten this is over looked, always use NGK plugs as well.

not too sure about your carb set up but when the gasket burst on my pinto it was doing a similar thing , but you will have a different carb but I would strip it right down , clean and make sure ever thing is fine .
I thought mines was an ht,coil , timming type problem wasted loads of time then found that was the cause

Old coils die slowly and first system is spurious cutting out after a while, restarts again when cold, revs hold back too.

Oil in coil gets hot and breaks down, swap it out and try again...gpa style Cossie one off s/h here as three times the v output of a standard oil coil....

Default SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!

OK did most of what you all recommended, so a sort through, it turned out to be the Ignition Coil. a quick £20 fix. She runs lovely now very smooth and not missing a skip. Only taken it up and around a few hills and streets at the moment taking it out for a proper run with a support vehicle tomorrow. But all looks good thanks for all your advice i have no doubt by cleaning up and checking everything else contributed to the fix and smooth running as well.
Cheers everyone will take some pics when out tomorrow.
