Default Cross Flow running problems

Hi been having problems with a 1300 mk 2 escort engine running rough and not accelerating beyond 35MPH, fitted a new fuel filter and ticked over brilliant sounded great, old filter was Black......Took the car out for a run yesturday and still didnt feel right, tick over was fine but as soon as it drove about 1/2 a mile it lost power then sounded as if it wasnt firing on all cylinders very very lumpy, so i thought it may well be a bit of rubbish in carb maybe, so took it a bit further where it eventually just died on me, no power at all and would not even rev. towed the jeep home and going to have a look tonight. The only things i checked last night was the simple ones first distributor cap, and rotor arm which are as new, HT leads which are on fine, however from past experience even new ones fail.
Thought i would take carb off and give a jet through just in case its blocked. also give the air filter a good clean/wash.
Oil is fine and water is fine, just wondering maybe piston seals but no knocking noise.
Hoping its just the carb that needs cleaning.
Its a 1300 crossflow engine from a Mk2 escort. If its not the carb and before i go stripping it down further has anyone had anything similar?
Looking on net it mentions the coil or maybe the distributor vacuum...

cheers
