common reason for vaux ecotec engines burning oil?
Hi peeps as above, my sister has a vectra Sri 130 1.8 ecotec which is using alot of oil but is not particularly Smokey, been told this is a common problem but what's the common cause, is it the rings or somethin more simple?

To be fair the cars a piece of shit and I hate vauxhalls but my sister is a single mum of 2 working 6 days a week and ain't got much money but if she's gonna chuck another engine in she may as well buy a cheap focus or dingo to smoke about in for a year

I bought a Vectra SRI 03 plate for my girlfriend as an inbetween car. 03 plate, 2.2 Ecotech, 70k miles, FSH, low owners etc. It drank oil, no leaks. I knew it was going to be shite and it was a throw away car but it was even worse than I thought it would be. Don't think vauxhall has produced a decent engine since the XE and LET's?

we've got an old zafira 1.6 ecotec at work its got something like 150k on it and it gets ragged to london and back most days and drinks oil like its going out of fashion, well it did until we stopped filling it back up its done about 10000 with no oil in it and it still hasnt died also dropped all its gearbox oil 2 weeks ago and it still works. boss has said when it dies he'll get us some more tourneo transits but that was about 4 months and 50k miles ago

Howdy all,had to jump in on this chinwag about inferior Vauxhall engines and their oil usage issue, myself being a die hard fan of the rear drive escorts and other fords of that era, back when they were good
All cars have their issues, design flaws etc and majority of these are down to how previous owners have driven/maintained/serviced them etc,iv had bad fords a plenty,iv had bad Vauxhalls a few,i spent majority of my life faithfully throwing money at the blue oval until in recent years the griffin has treated me so much better, and iv only had one bite me (Vectra enough said).my current astra sri 1.8 ecotec is flawless and uses no oil,yes no oil,i check it every sunday, its never let me down, looks and drives sharp and is a great family car.the mondeo tdci 130 it replaced however was the biggest money pit I ever encountered, tyres, wishbones, injectors, turbo pipes, egr valve, dual mass flywheel/clutch,brake linings, headlight failure etc etc zzzzzzzz.
Truth is its how you treat them at the end of the day,and I would say avoid any gm 2.2 engines petrol or diesel, they are simply a steaming pile best avoided, along with any chain driven corsa engines, and keeping in mind I love my fords, just don't make your wonderful site like that of the Volkswagen bunch with the "all other cars are crap because they are not Volkswagen" attitude,if this was the rule to live by then you would be discounting a heck of a lot of tasty machinery from your wish lists, pontiac, dodge, chevy, you know what im saying here, have a nice day

My daily is a 1.4 sxi astra, had it from 40k miles, has always chewed through oil mainly on longer journeys, top it up every week, doesn't smoke and drives as good as it can for an astra, on shorter journeys the oil filler cap gunk up with creamy sludge pointing to head gasket but that seems to be fine and uses no water.
Timing chain was rattling at 40k when I got it, pretty poor but had it done and it's been fine since, engine lights on now grrrrrrr
It's been reliable but not the best car I've owned as a daily.

100% it is a combination of the piston rings and also that they are just an absolute bag of shit ! Spent the last 20 years in independant garages speialising in Vauxhall and I dont think they made an engine worth owning since the XE/LET... I would go as far as to say I believe Vauxhall are nearly as crap as renault or peugeot now !

I checked it today as I havent used it for a while and as usual the oil level on the dipstick was at the full mark.

The 1.8 16v small block vauxhall engines same as the 1.6 and 1.4 16v engines biggest let down is valve stem seals worse case is rings which is more common on the 1.6 8v engines I put a 1.6 16v in a nova and after a few months of hard driving it was smoking it's tits off and it needed stem seals

It's probably been scrapped by now anyway as it's a 3 year old post.
1l per 1000 miles my brother in laws 2010 audi a5 was using 1l every 500 miles. Luckily audi forked out for a rebuild as it's a known issue with that engine.
There are worse car out there than vauxhall.

My other half had a 2004 Astra SRi for 12 months with a Z18XE lump. I was very impressed to be honest with you. At 12 years old it felt better put together than my MK1 Focus did at 8 years old. There was no rust anywhere which can't be said for MK1 Focus' either.
Performance wise I was very impressed, for a 'normal' model with a 1.8 N/A it was seriously impressive and nearly as quick as a stock ST170.
When we bought it I changed all the belts, pulleys, tensioners and gave it a good service with 0w40 fully synthetic oil. It spent a year doing mainly 2 mile journeys back and fore my partner's work and I took it on the odd trip to Bournemouth. I didn't have to top up the oil once!

It gets driven properly not poodled around in, when i drove to Blackpool and back from Southampton it did need some oil to top it up but it has always been an engine that does not use much oil.
