Default Pug 306 GTi-6

I've been offered one of these which has had a little bump on the front, but it's unregistered and only requires a headlight and some paint on the wing/bonnet. I'm quite tempted to buy it, fix it and strip it out to use for a track car, but another option is to break it. I'm going to take a look at it sometime in the next couple of days...

What areas are worth checking on these cars when buying??

What sort of cash do the GTi-6 parts fetch if I was to end up breaking it??

Cheers,
Grant

They are good cars, a friend of mine has one that we now use a backup track car and it is a lot of fun.

You may read about a "tapping" noise that they suffer from, I believe its down to incorrect cam timing at some point in their life, some are worse then others, the one we have does it but has been perfectly fine on track.

Resale wise I don't think their worth a lot but certainly a lot of fun for the money

This is my mates, he fitted the cage himself, cheap coilovers, uprated pads, 7 x 15" alloys with full slicks, it was a CAT D when he got it so sounds similar to yours, was a very easy fix.

Thanks for the info JB, your friends sounds very similar to mine... and has turned out almost exactly how I imagined this one would if it becomes a track car.

Is there an owners club for these where I could do a little research on them??

This one is slightly lowered, induction kit, exhaust system and the owner said it has been cammed... it's a little lumpy on idle and is meant to fly in the upper rev range. However I'll take that with a pinch of salt unless there are receipts to back that up.

Cheers,
Grant

+1 on axle play, majority of the people who use them properly run solid rear mounts, does away with a couple problems apparently.

Big problem with the 6's are electrics from what I've seen... mainly interior switches go. And if the air cons working it's a miracle lol. If you're tracking it not really big issues though

Heres my one granty 97 p reg phase 2

This has done 122k and doesnt use a drop of oil or water, its bog standard though, no lowered suspension or exhausts. I did read somewhere they reckon they loose torque if you fit induction kits, mine seems to have a very healthy induction noise as standard with a standard filter so can only imagine an inductuction kit must be really really loud.

They are a hoot to drive, pull like fuck, light as a feather yes you know there cheap and small and if you crash your gonna die lol but seriously they do upset a lot of fast cars out there. Clutch pedals are heavy as per all 306s mines needing a new clutch cable as it feels stretched.

They aint worth much, make sure the cambelts been changed and even for peace of mind do it again as they are very very common for snapping way before they are due for renewal times as per book.

Great cars break for more than they are complete

Problems

Air con
Heavy clutch
Rear axle
Remote control central locking fobs
Cambelt snap
Water pump failure
Drop links

They are great cars, and I rate them higher than the clip 172 ( I've had both)

I'll look into the solid rear mounts, if it's a cheap upgrade then it'd be worth doing.

Haha yeah, if things break, then they'd be removed. Until I'm just left with the bare minimum.

I'd more than likely bin the induction kit off, not a huge supporter of open cone stuff anyway if I'm honest.. shouldn't be hard to find a standard airbox and get an uprated panel filter for a few quid.

What sort of cost will your average mechanic take to do a cambelt service on one of these mate?? ...since I've read a wee bit about them and would be shit scared of the one on the car letting go on me at some point.

Thanks for the info and problem areas mate.

How come you rate them higher than the 172 then Spiky?? ...from what I've read, most people seem to really rate the 172 Clios so keen to see what you prefer about the 306.

Cheers,
Grant

ohh and i was a passenger in my friend old 306 gti-6. it was just lowered and had a BMC CDA induction kit, and it was marginally faster than a 5dr Focus st170 that had literally just got a de cat pipe and a k&n induction kit. So basically more bang for your buck, vs a focus st170

the car feels more planted in the 306, a bit more raw, it's a a bit more modern than the 306 and people prefer it

the 306 doesnt need to have it's neck rung to go quick where as the 172 does

i'm not entiley sure why i feel the 306 is nicer than the 172, as i love the look of the 172, it's great MPG, just never felt the love for it.

maybe i should have another to see...lol

or driven it on track?

but then it's going to feel slow compared to my 205

i'd expect the 306 to be more than a little quicker, as the 306 is a lighter car

Mine just had electrics giving up at times. Couldn't fault it mechanically, didn't feel as fast as my brothers 172 though. The running gear fetches good money if you get on the peugeot forums. People are always putting them in 205's and 106's etc. Even if its a nail you'd money.

Focus is a great car but the 306 gti kicks its arse with performance

150mph ........ Where did it read that from the clocks only go to 140mph

Never been in a clio sport though to compare, is it just a modern feel car as the 306 is and do feel old

i bought one last week as my s2 is just too much daily and always fancied one, w plate phase 3 china blue i gave Ł850 with half a tank of fuel. replaced the arb droplinks and rear pads so owes me about Ł900.

so far so good, turns in really well and the standard brakes seem up to the job,
cracking daily for the money

every thing works even the notorious air con lol.
good luck on the 6 forum im still waiting for a password from the admin
