Default E39s, what other than 530d worth considering?

well i'd really like a 530d sport but they seem to be the most expensive of the range and havent seen one with sub 100k yet

however if you look at 528s, 525, 530s, 535s etc. theyre are loads that look pretty decent for half the price.

so what are the other models like to run and maintain?

im used to M3 mpg figures but the idea of getting a more sensible car should come with it more sensible mileage!

My pal had a 540i and was quite fond of it. 4.4 v8 i think in them. Now has some kind of big engined e39 alpina B10 i think he said. Very quick car the new one. Not that the 540 was slow lol

My old man ran a 530i Auto for a few years, traded it in with about 180k miles on it and it was still going great... mainly motorway at 85-90mph, with a bit of driving round Manchester centre used to return c28mpg average.

Cheers,
Grant

Can't comment on the other models too much TBH but there no way I'd get hung up on mileage on one of those things. Currently have an M5 but before than I spent a lot of time looking for a good manual 530d and gave in to the urge of the M5, that said I'm thinking about back tracking to a 530d. What you have to rememeber is a car that has covered say 80k might be due for a lot of work (in the M5's case anyway) where as one with 100k will have had it done by then, so actually it's the better option.

Jim, my 528i had 144k when i sold it, and it drove like new. Wouldn't get you that much more MPG than your M3 i don't think, although i did hit 40mpg+ at 80 mph average cruise.

Jim, I had a 530i Sport on a 51 plate about 3 or 4 years ago, great car, comfy, never had a problem with it, was an auto as well which was nice. Pretty quick for the size, especially once it got going, although not heart pounding fast!!

Few pics

They are certainly more reliable, but chepear to fix? nope, about the same.

In all seriousness, a remapped 530D is a wicked car.

Remapped 530d is AWESOME - Stu mapped mine and it was epic.

If you want the big V8 without the M-tax then a 540i is always the way to go.

here is a snap of my 540i Sport yesterday after I wrapped the roof

Looking at changing the wheels to 19" VMR 710's (very similar to M3 CSL wheels) in matt black if I can't find an 18" OEM style wheel that will fit over the rear 6pots

540 is out of the question
530 seems to be just as juicy as the M3 so probably also out of the question
520,523,528,535 all seem to be quite juicy and potentially slow?
the tds i gather are the old style dervs that arent all that great?

so 520d and 525d... talk to me?

To be honest, if you're looking to save money and have a cheap car to use daily, a BMW doesn't really strike me as a smart move?

Gotta be better value cars out there IMO.

i would love another M5, at least i used my one not like the 3 door, expensive piece of metal to sit in the garage.

i had a 530I and was a nice confy car, not bad on fuel, had no problems at all, then i bought and M5 and loved that, if your not worried about performance what about a 520 2.2.

i should learn to read threads, you mentioned 520 above although the smaller engine doesn't mean better on fuel.

Jim there is a shit load of other cars that will be cheaper to run..insure..and repair.

If having cash is as im important as you having to buy a cheaper car why not get something that will actually save you some money????

Why not get a diesel vectra or astra or something like that.. You dont need to keep up with the 'Jones' so dont be a badge snob and look elsewere other than a BMW that WILL cost you money when it goes wrong

i thought M5 rims were shadow chrome or something similar as the finish is hard to match after a refurb.

I keep harping on as i'm converted, but I am really impressed with my 530d sport, great place to be for big miles, and actually very good fun to drive for a heavy diesel auto!

If you want cheap motoring, buy a 106 diesel and run it on veg oil , old engine oil & red .. They fall to bits, but the mechanicals just keep on going.
