I did the bottom end on my truck a few years ago, great fun, not even that hard as we had an overhead gantry with a winch, you have to watch your fingers though its not like working on a poxy car bay though, most things are easily accessible with the cab up and a few choice parts removed.

Despite everything being bigger and heavier, there is more room to work on them as opposed to cars. I prefer working on trucks to be honest because they are easier in general.

That is quite a smart looking XF.

Have to say, commercial vehicles, particularly cab overs are relatively easy to work on, with a caveat in regards to the correct lifting equipment.

It would appear that where ever it is ajamesc is working, they have it all under control.

Well to put it in some kind of perspective, the oil capacity of the sump on something that big will be around 25 litres of oil. The engine sat on the floor on it's sump will be about 4foot tall and about 3 foot long. The Flywheel will be about 600mm in diameter. Piston and rod combination will be roughly 300mm long and pistons about 5 to 6 inch diameter. The crank pulley will be about 300mm in diameter.

This is all generalisation and not exact but educated guesses from past experience of working on HGVs.

Similar to a car then. It's been a while since I worked on an vehicles in any decent capacity as I sit behind a desk now but occasionally I do get involved. I assume they are on several multispeed CAN as well as LINbus too?

I'd still sooner work on a truck over a car though. And deffinately more so than a coach!

Ahhh another mx engine camshaft failure, i am a daf mechanic myself based in leicester, whereabouts is ur garage/dealership? we have undertaken many of these camshaft issues, its either turbo gone, cam followe dropped valve or cam itself on these its never straight forwards hey. them mx engines are a smart bit of kit but they dont seem upto the job hey. and in relation to what somebody said about amount of oil they contain, good guess but you were a way out, they hold 36 litres of engine oil in total. bloody big things!

Must be more to these cams going than meets the eye technical ok,ed taking the head off this one as it has to have the modded valve springs!

Quality job that better than walking about with a tapping hammer!!!!!

Prefer single cylinder head jobbie like the mighty Scania, but you get used to what you are working on.

Much prefer working on trucks to cars far better to get stuck into!!!

I knew they'd need a lot of oil. It's been a while since I've been in the workshop but the last time I was droping oil and filters on trucks I was on Mercs which were about 27 litres on the V6 engines IIRC. I seem to have in the back of my head that some of the larger and older trucks used to hold oil capacities in the 40 something litres.

Don't we know it! We maintain a small fleet of Plaxton bodied Dennis Javelin nails with the 6 litre ISBe Cummins enigne in. They have a habit of cracking exhaust manifolds which means you're in and out of it like porn stars cock as half of it you have to do from inside and the rest outside, but you end up doing a bit inside then out, then back in, then out agin....

I forgot about the horse boxes, which is odd as I've just been out today to help a girl I know with hers as it wouldn't start!!! Fortunately hers has a tilting cab! Most I have seen have a rough as fuck hole sawn out of the engine hump with a shit cover screwed over the top. Usually you end up rasping your arms to death on them whilst upside down having your head fill up with blood till you feel like you're about to explode...

Few years ago I did a steerng box on one but it would't come out unless you removed the drop arm off the box first. Imagine trying to remove a box off a truck without tilting the cab, and having no access to get a buzz gun onto the 65mm nut on the drop arm (or any of the other bolts/nuts for that matter). Then having to get the oxy on it to warm up the drop arm and bar it off with a couple of prybars, whilst doing all this behind the electrical housing in front of the OSF wheel.

Our lad that works on them absolutely rapes them every 6 weeks. He comes back with a list of defects the length of your arm!

this is what i do for a living, i manage an engine test department for a fuel injector manufacturer, deal with these engines day in day out, camshaft changes are a regular thing as they develop new fuel injection strategies in my test cells

luckily the engines arent in vehicles and that makes it alot easier to work on them!

I actually meant in general, not purely the MX engine, or even DAF for that matter.
