There's some right cunts on here, it's getting worse!
I mean, so the kid doesn't do himself any favours, but some of the arguments from the other side are pretty pathetic too!
I think we've all seen examples of elderly Fords (or other makes) be built up to a standard that would spank pretty much any modern exotica.
I fully appreciate how capable a 996/997 Turbo is and how it can be made better, but you can't rationalise what you like and you could show me one that does 300 mph. I'd appreciate the achievement and the capabilities, but I still wouldn't like it.
Yes, you can make a strong claim that a 996 Turbo presents the best all-round performance and usability for Ł30k, but if it were me I'd still buy an M6 as it's what I prefer by a million times. I wouldn't give two hoots if you could give me a whole list of cars that would spank it round a track or have more grip etc etc etc
If someone wants an 800bhp or a 1000bhp Skyline, who cares if they have to spend a fortune to achieve it? If it's what THEY want to spend THEIR money on, good luck to them I say!
With what I'm shelling out on my 12 year old Escort, I could probably have bought 4 996 Turbos by this time next year, but I didn't want to. They're not my thing and never will be. Live and let live I say, and I'll happily have a race against any Cosworth or 911 on here.....

Bloody nora - some people on here must have the biggest blinkers in the world
The newer breed of 911's are awesome machines
You always hear about people taking on Porsches and winning and they all claim to be the 911 Turbo models. Interesting when you find out that they are infact the lesser Boxsters and Caymans

lol just noticed you said that you drive with psm on lol says it all just like my old e39 m5 if you turn all the saftey buttons off there all over the place fun in its place but dont mean it handles well just means the computers are compensating for the poor handling obviously my opinion of my old my m5 not your porsche!!
Your point may stand in your opinion Cozy777 but If you ask everyone on this topic, they where all relating to the newer models not the very old one you where on about.

a LOT of cars could beat a boxster.... but thats not the topic!
We're comparing a reasonably tuned Cosworth to a 996 or a 997 TURBO.... there is no comparison! the 911 is far superior in many many ways.... not just in speed and handling... but in technology too!

yep, you can't deny that advances in technology! I love my old Fords but you can't ignore the FACT a modern Porsche is far superior in every area except perhaps soul. And then you could argue old Fords only have that cos they break down! Lol

I have no Idea how you can even compare a BMW to a Porsche, regardless of its badge it is still a BMW, its a completely different league to a Porsche, let alone a M5 VS a 996 Turbo.

The most recent Porker I tried was a 08 997 C2 and it felt nothing special at all,the older 964,993 ect are a far more engaging car with better steering and more charasmatic AND RELIABLE engines.

The problem is with comparing any 2 cars is that there are just so many variables. Age, cost, technology and state of tune being just some of them.
Fair play to the OP for having a little 'play' and sharing his experience on here. Also to the Porsche driver who gave the OP respect by putting his thumb up!

To give an idea how good they can be a 996 gt3 will lap knockhill in 57 sec , Andy G's focus will do it in 51 but that is probably the fastest track cosworth ever.
Cosy777 I wasn't trying to be a prick if that's what the above comment was about but you trying to say all 911's were shit after driving a 30 year old version was a joke.

If I wanted to take a cooking car and turn it into a supercar slayer I wouldn't use a cosworth, but not so much 'cos of the engine, but as you say, the running gear is too old and shonky!

In first - apologies - I missed the early turbo you listed - I have not driven one, so cant comment on that.
In respect of the Palmer sport 911 - I completely agree - the early Tiptronic gearboxes are hateful hateful hateful things. I have honestly no idea why they include that car in their line up.
As for the E39 M5 - I had one of those, and the traction control on those was awful - just too overbearing always! I switched it off almost as soon as I started the engine. In fairness to Porsche, the porsche system is a completely different entity - it doesnt interfere until you have made a tragic judgement call, by which time it simply prevents a very big bill
