got a 3.5 classic atm and tow a horsebox, which tbh struggles at times so looking to upgrade and something a bit more economical!

so seen a tidy looking 97 p38 auto diesel which sounds sweet enough. it's done 130k miles he wants 2750. been loking in autotrader/ebay and there seems loads with much higher miles for more money.

other prob is i think the suspension is in fully raised position. but been doing a bit of reading and theres a valve or something that sticks for about £30. push comes to shove you can buy coil kits for about 300.

so yeah, any views?

Best to consider the coils first as last,apparently make them much nicer to drive.love the shape myself.bm engine is strong but might struggle a bit towing a big horsebox fully laden up as standard but they're quite tunable iirc.as the pumps wear with age they can struggle to start when warm but you can mod it on eBay for a tenner or so!!!Being a rangey electrics aren't incredible but they're a nice spec,heard that the alarm fobs used to be affected by CCTV if you parked it too close too a camera?although their at an age now where all these problems are known and easily dealt with.usual corrosion probs but chassis are a million times better than of old.

Very smart that,could you consider gas?I've got it on my grand Cherokee and I get 240 miles to just under £40 which I don't consider too bad.your on about 15mpg with that?mines 16 on gas but about 18-20 odd on petrol,so it's not like for like.I know for a gas conversion for an 8cyl for £350.

About 13 to 14 round doors mate and to be honest i'm not that bothered about using loads of fuel, the 380 bhp saffy I just sold drank a fair bit as I drove it on flat out everywhere lol

I'd be being generous if i said my classic 3.5 was doing 15mpg, less when towing.

anyone know what the 2.5 p38 is like on fuel?

I've got a manual 2.5 dse find it slightly under powered when towing my car trailer, you can get a plug in PSI power box (chip) to up the power and torque some people say they are undriveable with out the chip, I wouldn't go that far but it is a car engine in a 2 ton full time 4x4 and as said they do have there fair share of problems, The key fob thing is sorted with a new receiver but if you have a good battery you want need one.

Buy the petrol one fella, around 2 miles less per gallon but loads better to drive.

Shit slow aint they, go for a v8 one as you get similar mpg with the diesel

Thought they'd do a bit better than that derv wise?but as said it's a big bus.I get nearly 30 out of the ml 270,although I wouldn't fancy offroading it!!!Cherokee seems pretty good on the ruff stuff!!you could always run it on red!!!!!

ouch, i was assuming atleast 25mpg more on a run. i.ve seen the plug in boxes on ebay but i.m a bit dubious with them on a old engine thats done a few miles. and by the time ive spent 300 on a that and 300 on a coil conversion i.m not far off the money for a td5 discovery which maybe the better car overall?

Love the look of them on 18's and that engine is top.I would have thought 25 but hey ho.td5s are awesome on fuel iirc?anything jap 4x4 is pretty tough but a little thirsty.the ml is lively for towing and great on fuel but there 5k minimum and not exactly good offroad.

can i ask how much you paid for your 4.0?

seen one local to me up for £1400 with less miles in a better colour on lpg!
