The English McLaren driver did a burnout with smoking tyres and a fishtail in a silver Mercedes along Lakeside Drive in front of a Victoria Police divisional van that pulled him over about 9.15pm.
Hamilton was visibly upset as his car was towed away.
He will also be fined.
In a statement, Hamilton said: "This evening, I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police."
"What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."
It's understood he told police he was worried the incident would dent his reputation.

All over the news here and papers. Sad part was and he probably didnt know, there was a motorbike death not 50m from where he did it which closed the road around there for 4 hours earlier yesterday so Police were everywhere anyway, Coupled with all the idiots who come into town for the GP and misbehave in their cars and it being one of the main streets for bars in Melbourne. Essentially he was a sitting duck!
Only yesterday they ran an article about the cars the stars drive, and by the end of the day he wasn't. About 3kms from here.

Roll on this afternoon for the action, late change in the weather predicted so could be a very interesting race.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
The medical car is an estate, which was actually photographed at Wembley if one of the reader comments is to be believed.
Hamilton's car, the one you can see at the roadside and being winched onto the truck afterwards, is a saloon.
