hi i have a sierra and i want the best diff for my spec coz i dont get all this 3.62 stuff and all the numbers
i have a 2 liter dohc with the type 9 box
can anyone help me please

i have an open diff at the mo and scares the shit out of me sometimes

weld it... ive come to this conclusion, the quaife and gripper is no permenant fix.. when you shit a crown gear on a uprated diff you have to buy a new diff and pay to have your uprated internal put in again.... if its not knackered, because of bits of metal from the crown gear, its just too expensive..

i broke my diff last night and i'm just having a tea break right now as i'm half way through geting the diff out.. a mates welding it for me tomorrow morning, so i'll be up lakeside tomorrow night

I've been there and done it a few times so when you start breaking driveshafts/cv joints and casings what you going to do then? fuck it off and buy another one 7.5" diffs are getting thin on the ground now and your looking at Ł300+ for a good one then you're gonna weld it again.

If you have an uprated diff you only need the CWP so you can sell the std LSD and casing

they don't break that often and the benifits of having a proper diff far far outweighs the possibility of paying for fixing it.

I wouldn't have a cossie without an uprated diff of some sort.

a welded diff will be shit in a road car i have a gripper and its a very good diff ill agree i did take all the teeth off my crown wheel and pinion but thats more down to haveing around 500ft lbs but i got a good condition standard one and had it shot pened and super finished so now its about as good as it will get unless i go 9'' but thats to much money but hes only has a 2l dohc sierra so a standard cosworth diff will be more than up to the job!

apart from the std diff part IMO If you have the money to buy one it doesn't matter how much power you've got or not got the car would be a lot better to drive with an uprated unit of some sort.

If anything lower powered would be easier to drive as they do get a bit lively when you add lots of power

 

i have a very good cosworth 2wd lsd for Ł200,strong enough for what you want mate

 

a standard 2wd would be best IMO.

if you only want the diff to not be open...do you want more acceleration, top speed, or just not an open diff?

 

If it the same backend as the xr4i (which i think it is) I've been through this already.

cossy diff won't fit without fitting the whole cossy beam inc shafts and brakes

The diff he has in the car will have push in shafts so they will have to be changed to the cossie ones to match the diff then cv joints on the cossie are too big to go through the trailing arms and the car will have drums on the back so they will have to be swapped over to discs.

You could grind the trailing arms for clearance but it gets so thin you can almost see through it which I wasn't happy with then you have to mess about with the drums

and if you remove the driveshaft cups out of the cossie diff to use the push in shafts they won't reach far enough in to the diff to make both wheels turn.

in the end I fitted a complete cossie beam as I fitted a cossie engine and box aswell.

I then went through 2 welded diffs I cracked the casing on 1 underneath the crownwheel and the 2nd fired some weld through the rear cover fitted the 3rd and sold it to a local person to me who then sold it to pete RS specialist who sold it on ebay to a guy down the road to me

It was a fun car

 

a gripper would be perfect for your spec they are an awesome diff.

i remember reading a few of your posts about racing exotic cars, u wont be winning with a welded diff mate, there good fun but no good if you wanna drive fast with confidence imo

if the car is a 2litre twin cam , it will have screw in shafts, disc brakes already and iirc the esc cos diff will fit straight in !! and that would do his job nicely imo

 

Only the higher spec dohc cars had rear discs. If it has rear disc, chances are you have a 7inch open diff. Use a xr4x4 lsd or cossie 4x4 diff as this will fit your beam. And the drive shaft flanges will fit fine. If you do have drums, then all you need is the drive shaft flanges and you can swap these over easily onto your original shafts. So one end will be push fit and the other end will bolt up to the diff. The diff ratio is different (3.64:1) so it does blunt the acceleration abit as i have done it on mine. A 2wd 7 1/2 inch would be even worse as these are 3.62:1. The 2wd casing will need to be modified to fit a seven inch rear beam as well. PM me if you need more info as I have done all this recently.

I didn't know if they come with discs or not I was comparing it to the 4i that I had

Where were you when I did mine I did go straight for a 7.5" on my car due to fitting the YB and intentions of driving it like an arse

Good to know its a you can straight fit the 7" to the ones with rear discs I'm going to get 2l saff for a bit of practice but how many cossies do you see that actually spin both wheels properly
