Default Is it worth fitting an alarm myself?

is it worth fitting an alarm myself? will the insurance recognise it?

i'm competent enough in an old escort loom, its not even comparable to a loom by todays standards, but looking at the alarms online, its averaging £100 extra for fitting! just for a certificate. sod that. and i'll bet its some monkey that does damage, then claim "its only an old orion mate"

do i have to shut up and pay it or can i get the certificate later from anywhere?

you might get a cert from elsewhere but they need to check it before they will issue a cert and that all costs

insurance don't really recognise one woithout a cert

i'll pay someone £20 - £30 quid for a cert if i have to , its still £70 cheaper than getting someone to fit one. i hate paying other people work on my car when i can do the job perfectly.

its fair enough on the insurance though i suppose. they need some proof that its doing its job.

I asked my insurance company what discount i'd get for an alarm and they said nothing... so I fitted it myself. Toad Ai606 or something? Pretty easy, just follow the wiring diagrams.
They send you the certificates anyway, so if you knew someone who fits them....

I rang a place in Birmingham (repuatble car audio centre) and they were complete idiots about it trying to convince me that it was a major operation and please bring it in and dont attempt it yourself i dont think halfords would do it either lol. i'll try the yellow pages at the weekend i think, thanks.

thats fair enough. i was thinking of telling them it was fitted already and i dont have the certificate, but then rememberd i'd had the car 3 years and shoudl've noticed it before now but yeah, the ai606 is the one i was looking at. something reasonably competent that goes bleep bleep when i press the button etc, more a visual deterrent as much as a safety element.

Unlikely to gety a discount on the insurance cost on a car like a orion due to age/value/likelyness to get nicked.
There is nothing hard about installing the alarms, I just bought direct from Toad a C4 unit, as someone had a C5T2, which uses the C4 unit that had gone wrong, so they sold me a C4 alarm instead of having to buy the whole lot.
Toad did NOT want to know about the damage caused by the back up battery leaking all over the pcb when it was tired and shagged out, it was a NICD pack.
Be aware if you want arm/disarm beeps that you will need to know the switch sequence which you do NOT get with the alarm.
Furthermore the alarm will be silent arm/disarm, as it is actually illegal now to have a beep on new fitted systems, due to noise position.
The switch setting done by the 4 pin code number(counting led flashes) then pressing button 1 or 2 as needed is easy but cock it up, and you can mess other settings.
If you want a copy of the switch sequence just pm me.
As you most likely won't get a discount there are other systems as good as toad but cheaper, like Scorpion(who own TOAD), sigma etc(also owned by scorpion).
The sterling and A101 are certainly excellent systems, my all time fave was the ai600.

Cheers for the info. i'll look into the scorpion alarms. the reason i wanted toad is i've heard good and bad about clifford, so no good to me and i know you can add total closure and tilt sensors etc onto the toad. which is nice to know.

Tidied up some shitty ignitiopn wiring and a bit more behind my dash and charged me 2 ton, done it at my place of work was only there a few hours. TOP TOP guy would recommend him to anybody

I fitted the full closure clifford in mine, was simple there is a forum on the web where i got the wiring/installation guide for my clifford took me a couple of hours to fit but that way i put all the ecu's for the alarm where i wanted them and not just thrown behind the clocks to rattle around like the one i paid to have fitted in my last ERST.

Yeah fitting alarms is piss easy , thats why alarm company's spend thousands of pounds on training days for thier customers to attend

Have fun in a few months time when your alarms start going off in the middle of the night waking every fucker up , or better still when someone does eventually break in and it does fuck all .

Put it this way , just because you can buy re mapping software on ebay it does not make you an engine tuner.
enjoy

So i take it your an alarm fitter?

but seriously; get over yourself. if you think its hard to wire an alarm into a car loom designed / revised in 1985 you need your head looking at.

No , not anymore , got fed up with fucknuggets thinking they know it all and then bringing thier car to me to sort out thier bodged install's , providing they didnt set fire to thier car first.

i've never been arsed about it bringing insurance down, more so piece of mind for myself tbh

proper alarm installer will hide the box properley route the wires properley, use heat shrink not tape etc.....

i'm a registered datatool alarm fitted for motorbikes, fully trained and do a VERY tidy professional job.

but i till payed a professional car alarm instaler to do mine, again for peace of mind as its not my usual thing

Although now lapsed I was VSIB acredited, also used to be foreman at Hunter International with responsibility for all GAS/Electrical/water/Heating installs in trucks, these were large 4 axle trucks converted into horsebox/sleepers.
There is NOTHING hard, so long as you can solder, and have a very basic understanding of electrics.
It's like anything else hard until you know how, sure there are people who will get it wrong, and the need to keep it all mysterious so as to justify why only pros should do it.
Bit like the temp gauges on ebay for £40 the ones with a nice blue scale in F or C, look well smart, I buy these for £3, and one mod, sorry RESISTOR later, they work on 12v, as I can only assume people think it hard to modify to do 12.
Jesus, for £40 I would offer a 2 sensor version, and maybe even selectable different colours, again VERY easy, and cheap, about another £5!!
