Vauxhall 8v ohc !

Before you all send me hate mail, the reason i chose this engine is that almost every vauxhall that had these engines went on to do 150k +. My mates car has 173,000 miles on it and all he does is put fuel in it ! Even if you try to kill'em they just keep going and going... As for tuning, twin webbers was the best - even on the little nova sport ! I'm a massive ford fan (12 fiesta's and counting), but every time I raced a vauxhall, it would kick my ass ! Don't think i didn't try - i blew up an XR2i trying to catch an astra gte... B*****D !!!

agree with most of that actually. dont think the crossflow is the best engine ever, nor the A series.
my mk1 has the crossflow and my pal joe's mini has the A series. they both drink fuel, make a crummy noise, break down constantly, and are heavy iron ugly things. i love them to bits but there nothing compared to a modern duratec. :/

Vw Twin Charged TSI engine is a pretty impressive piece of engineneering IMO also Audis new 3.0 v6 TFI Supercharged 6 cylinder engine not having drive I cant really comment from that perspective but on paper peformance and C02 emissions seem pretty impresive.

Personally I like the V12 TDI in the Q7 The engine was rated at 490 hp and 740 lb·ft and 5.5 seconds which was a derivitive of the R10 TDI used in the Race Car

Unlike most racing cars competing in the LMP1 series, the R10 is powered by a diesel engine, with two turbochargers and utilizes the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) technology. The engine itself is a 5.5L V12 made of aluminium, employing common rail direct fuel injection technology. The turbochargers are supplied by Garrett AiResearch, with 39.9 mm (1.57 in) restrictor plates mounted in front of the intake.

The weight of this engine is a problem for Audi. The latest Audi 3.0 L V6 TDI (183 ci) weighs 220 kg (485 lb), and the 4.2 L V8 TDI 255 kg (562 lb) (256.2 ci) but their blocks are made of compacted graphite iron (CGI). The V12 is rumoured to weigh upwards of 200 kg (441 lb);[7] Audi engineers say that the weight per cylinder is the same as the preceding 3.6-litre FSI V8 of the Audi R8.[8] The wheelbase has been increased over the R8 to 2,980 mm (117.3 in) to account for this. This is unfavorable against the 130 kg (287 lb) of a concurrent Judd V10, and even the 180 kg (397 lb) of the Ricardo turbodiesel prototype based on it.[9]

The restrictor is larger than necessary, the car is rumoured to produce 700 hp (522 kW; 710 PS) in qualification, limited by the fuel combustion quality. This value couldn't be maintained in race because it could clog the particulate filter. The peak pressure in the cylinder is probably around about 200 bar, compared with 85 bar for an atmospheric petrol engine.[10]

First produced in 1952 with 803cc when it produced 28bhp in the Austin A30 & production finished in 2000 with 1275 in the Mini-Cooper 1.3i. Was producing 93bhp in the 1983 MG Turbo.

The 'A' series gave a lot of people a lot of fun back in the 60's & is probably my vote for a great engine it was a modifiers dream. Bore out a 1275 & fit a Supercharger & she was 1960's fast with 140bhp when most cars had 40bhp . Still remember my first drive in a modded Mini .

Big block ford 460ci v8! Mmmmm. My old man had one in his mk2 zephyr (ford fever) the red one at classic ford. He built it mildly tuned back in 1990 it was kicking out About 500bhp and running 11 secs quarters . Until last year when his mate was racing and it let go! 20 years! Now it's running a 429ci and a bit slower lol.

I might be wrong, but aren't these individual throttle bodies responsible for loosing their respective butterflys and taking out the whole engines in the process - or are these different in some way to the diesels of circa 04 on...?

The 1.6 zetec in my escort! 160k and still starts on the fucking button every day. Amazing.

On a serious note, my vote goes to the V8 as used in the F355. 8500rpm in a v8 and a soundtrack to die for, truly awesome.

Obviously we're talking mass produced here and not racing engines, otherwise any F1 engine really!

Top fuel drag engines are actually based on the Chrysler Hemi 426 engines. Big Block Chevy's are cool engines though.

This picture pretty much explains all of it, but in a nutshell: instead of having the camshaft(s) at the top of the comustion chamber, with the lobes acting directly onto the valves (via tappets etc), the camshaft is in the block itself, and pushrods are used to transfer the camshafts profile, via rockers, to the valve, thus:

Fantastic performance and potential power. Dry sump oiling standard.
What other engine can be converted to a full race set up with just a few modifications?
2.0 liter race engine - 210+ HP standard forged steel crankshaft - 8 main journals, dry sump, forged steel connecting rods, Mahle pistons, and fantastic flowing cylinderheads.

What other 210+ HP 2.0 liter engine would last as long as as a Porsche 6?
These were good for over 50 hours of full out competition.

Three Engines stand out for me:

1. Rover V8, this engine basically powered Britain and was used in every British Leyland mark. TVR also used it...

2. VW Legendary air cooled engine out of the Beetle, camper etc

3. HONDA VTEC, no VTEC ststem ever made has gone faulty as far as reports go

No, different things. It's the swirl flaps on the E46 320d that break up over time then lunch the engine when they're ingested.

I think the BMW S54 gets my vote for overall best engine. It's very flexible, sounds great and is capable of running to high mileages. It's all naturally aspirated too which a power output over 100Bhp per litre.

Some other mentions would go to the original five cylinder fitted out in various Audi's - I would also say the current five cylinder found in the TT-RS is a peach as well.

The new V10 in the Lexus LFA is apparently an engineering masterpiece.
