So what's the difference between the P1 and the 22B?

I thought the 22b was the only three door till I saw this thread...

The 22b is a lot different to the other Imprezas around at that time. The engine is 2.2 litres for a start.

Check out this link for some info - http://www.22b.com/media_jap22b.htm

love the P1's and 22b's tho
If its been rebuilt and maintained properly, it will last. Same as any engine.

Ive helped rebuilt plenty of them, none have failed other than a couple of dummies who think its ok to drive with no oil.

unless your connecting det to seized bearings which some people do though, thats besides the point.

As I said before, Until someone can prove why SOME engines seize bearings, I wouldnt buy a subaru....
Subaru held the endurance top speed record for a number of years, think it was a flat out run over 24hours or something.

I used to agree with that but..

I've had 3 Type R's (including a 2.5L 20g example I converted) but I'd rather have the P1 now.

Yes the Type R has dccd but you never bother touching it really and the P1's gearing is more suited for our roads (type r quickly becomes tiresome) plus the P1 looks better std (nice front lip, rear spoiler and driving light, nicer seats) and most have better brakes than the type r's and more compliant suspension which is better suited to the UK roads.

I've had subarus for many years (and read lots) but I've never heard of the seizing bottom end thing. Yes, there's a lot of stories of bottom end faliures but to be honest I'd probably buy a P1 with a blown engine and fit a later STI bottom end and enjoy (the later bottom ends are much better) or just worry about it if/when it happens (which is what I've said to my mate who's just bought a P1)

I have just recently been involved with Subaru bottom ends and I can guarantee u that what "Vroomptschoooouuu!" says is true. We had one fail, we had the bottom end rebuilt by what most would see as a good engineering company. We ran the car in PERFECTLY and then ran it up once on the rollers and it failed. I was standing there at the time and it was NOT getting a hard time and was seeing NOTHING LIKE the abuse I give every car I have ever owned once they are warmed up. It failed instantly and needed another total bottm end re-build.

So far it is going well so I hope it is one of the 19 out of 20 "say" that don't fail rather than the 1 out of 20 that does!!

Damn things.

P1's rock tho chaps. A good going remap and an exhaust and they are seriously quick. They handle much better than the other understeery scoobys too, so I personally WOULD pay the extra for a P1. Of course getting ready to have the engine re-built with a NEW crank like the chap on the thread said/did earlier.

Cheers,
RW

P1 and the 22b and all jap imports impreza's don't run well on the 95 octane over here. Most of them will melt pistons. And the jap's drive the shit out of them too. If the chassic number starts with GC8 its a jap import.Buy a uk spec only.

Yes! It was amazing shove, it'd pull like fook from nothing. The 2.5 with the type R gearing was eager to say the least.

Torque was great it made 363bhp/363ftlb torque.... made 200ftlb at 2000rpm, 275ftlb at 3000rpm, 350ftlb at 3400rpm and a peak of 363ftlb. As you can imagine with the low gearing it nipped through the gears quite well. I fitted 900cc injectors and chucked the inj duty down a fair wack on my power FC (on std sti jdm map) and drove it to rollers, it was mapped to the power/torque above and got quite warm on the dyno after a while so was further tweaked on the road. I was a little dissapointed with the numbers but I'm sure it'd have made more after the road tweak and being cooler. It certainly went well and had my mate gripping the seat bolsters on the way home.

Not true, GC8 means it's a classic regardless of where it was registered. UK cars are lower spec'd than imports and have less power, get a Japanese import and get it mapped for UK fuel and you are on to a winner

22B can only be described as an immense machine.

I had one and through paranoia had an Apexi fitted and mapped by Andy Forrest.
I hammered the $hit out of that thing after that and never had a problem.

Any excuse for a pic

you smoking crack ???

if its got a 7 digit chassis number its a import and if its got a 17 digit chassis number its a uk car,,,,,, uk cars are MUCH cheeper to insure,,, but they have steel bonnets, are worth less than my aftershave collection and are slower than IMA's less smart brother suffering from a hangover with a pencil stuck up hes nose

i wouldnt got for anything other than a STI but i would say that as that was my choice

A good UK car is as good a base as any to start from.

And STI's only have forged pistons. They still have the same weak rods as the other models.
They often do have better valvetrain and cam profiles though.

Nearly all models from 99 on have solid lifters. Although there are variances of over bucket shims, underbucket shims, and some shimless.

All of the heads flow very well anyway, but yes there are lots of differences over the years.

I see your point but most of the cars i see are japs imports that give the trouble, they are worse than the irish when it comes to drivin.UK spec with a d-cat down pipe with a big intercooler with the right ecu re-map i think you'd have a good car.Anyway fuck cars Happy new year to yea

He is right though, the P1's standard engine management is not ideal for UK fuel.

anyone wanna buy a focus rs? am wanting another P1 now! ha ha

think the trick with the re-builds is to make sure and use a NEW crank. STI 9's came with a nitrile coated one which is meant to be better and is same price as a version 5 one.

and yes the P1 goes sideways great, compared to other classic subarus (not inc typeR's!!)

can be had for good money too
