Really beginning to think about this now - I've got nothing holding me back here in the UK, and I really want a change...

So how do I go about it? Short of marrying an American girl, how do I go about getting citizenship? I don't really fancy selling up over here, moving out there, renting, buying all the shit all over again, then finding out I don't qualify for citizenship and having to do it all again in reverse!

What the deal with jobs? Is it like Oz where you have to have a job or career on "the list" to be able to work out there?

I've been looking for a backdoor way in to America, i'm a truck driver, but its not classed as skilled job so they don't want me, so the backdoor option is the only way, just can't seem to find a back door, marrying is plan 'B', I spent 3 months out there on a road trip holiday last year, did 6000 miles and had a great time, can recommend doing it if you have the funds, can't wait to go back, i like the central area like texas, simply because of the property prices and the lack of people, just big open spaces, for £10,000 you could buy a few acres, then plant a static caravan or build a house.

Canada is much easier for a brit. It's very "american" feeling to you lot but it still has a taste of home.

You can be as redneck as you want or as sophisticated as you want. One thing you'll like here over the states is the car import rules. No cossies allowed in the US and you'll also like that there is no "class" thing here. You are who you are, not what family/income bracket you are from or anything. America has a bit of that still.

I've only ever been to New York and New Jersey lol....

But since changing jobs, life has changed somewhat, and whilst my previous job wasn't "keeping me here", I think it's more the lifestyle change that's made me realise there is nothing keeping me here anymore. Naturally I'll miss friends very much, which is why I wouldn't move away anywhere in this country - but if the opportunity to move to somewhere else, like the US, was on the cards I'd be a fool not to take it!

But I don't know anything about emigrating!

RS500 is limited production. It is exempt from the 25 year old rule.

Sure there a a couple cossies in the USA, but they are either trailer queens or not genuinely registered. Merkur VINs have been used on the past among other loopholes. Erik's username here is fastmaul.

The Escort Cosworth has type approval (you have to make various modifications) there was around 20 imported into the US in the 90's, even with the type approval its still a pain in the arse to get one over so best waiting on the 25 year rule. There are various other ways to get cars in equally long winded.

I was under the impression that Canada had a 15 year rule so most Cosworth's will be 15+ years old by now.

As to the original question, the easiest way in is if you have a job offer and get the required visa, you can then apply for a green card once your in the states. Of course like all places in the world if you put a large amount of $'s towards the problem you'll no doubt have no problems getting in .

problem is you can wait the 2 years, buy a home etc, and they can tell you to do one... best way is to marry an american chick,iirc, they base it on who you know in the states, your past here - ie ever been nicked etc, skills/qualifiacations etc.

You need to look into the business visa's I can't remember the exact figures but if you have around £150k to invest in an American company then you can get an E2 visa, like wise if your investing something like £500k in an designated employment area you can get yourself a green card.

Either way its not cheap, so chances are you'll just have to do what the rest of us do and get a job with an American company and come in that way.

when i looked into this early 00's , you had to employ a number of American nationals per uk people ,cant remember the exact figure .

may of changed these days .

You sure about the green card? My sister is there and she has a green card. Maybe the rules have changed again.

I'm heading out there in May/June. As i'm transferring my degree to the states and have had already studied in the states before, the embassy said getting a green card shouldn't be a problem.
