Default Paying a private car seller??

Might sound a stupid question, but, I'm going to look at a car today, around £8K's worth, if I decide I wanna buy it, what would be the best way to pay him?

Request cash from the bank and roll up with 8k of reddies a few days later?

The CHAPS transfers take a few days, are there any other ways to put both my mind and the sellers mind at ease? Or is hard cash the only instant way to buy?

Have always paid cash to private sellers in the past, but not bought a car privately for quite this amount yet.

bankers draft is safer than cash for you, as it is like an instant cheque, which is only raised by your bank for cleared funds, i.e they will only make the draft if the money is there!

or cash obviously.

there are far too many scams around; even bankers draft isnt safe anymore

if i was selling a car i would want hard cash.

if you are in a fairly big town; once you've viewed the car and happy that you both trust each other, go to the bank and get the cash out - (obviously pre warn the bank branch you'll be wanting to withdraw 8k)

pay cash, take a mate with you to sit in your car and hide the cash in the car, if all goes well then cool, if not you have security

Cash would be the only thing I would accept if I was selling something for that ammount but as said take at least one other person with you just in case it all goes wrong. There is too many scammers out there just waiting for a chance to steal from you.

Ideally take cash but don't let on that you will be bringing it there and then.

I have done a bank transfer that goes over the next day, but cost about £35, that was on a 12k car the the seller did not want that cash with him.

The other way around it if the seller doesn't want cash but you don't want to do a transfer is to take cash and once the deal is agreed, take the seller to his bank and pay the cash in for him.

That way he has no responsibility for the cash until it goes over the counter and they will also spot any fake notes.

and HPI HPI HPI!!!

Not always the case though. I know someone who paid in £3000 and he had a call from the bank the next day saying over a grand of it was fake, and they ended up taking it out his account.

Anyway, yeah take the cash and a mate or a couple of mates. No one seems to trust bankers drafts anymore as there not as good as cash anymore.

I woudlnt trust a bankers draft as a seller as I dont know how to spot a real one from a fake one!

I would take a 500 quid deposit with you, and if you want the car then discuss with the seller how he wants the balance as some people might not want to take 8K in cash off you.

As chip says, a sensible cash deposit, to prove you aint a messer, then arrange to TT or chaps the money to him. If he's half decent, another day or two, to make sure your both happy and secure with the transaction, aint gonna hurt is it?

Update gents, I did exactly this, picking it up at the weekend with the rest of the reddies, he seems trustworthy enough, and I'm a big fella if he pulls a bat on me

Out of interest, what's to stop a seller fucking off to a different country with the money and the car if you do a CHAPS transfer?

Oh btw, it's a minty fresh Megane 225, hpi'd it and it's all clear, so looking forward to picking it up now.

Exactly, which is why it should never be done that way mate. Loads of scammers requesting chaps payments etc and then doin one, once its gone through and withdrawn.
