Yea, sounds like the thing completely shut down in mid air from the reports and the fact that none of the procedures when a plane has a problem seem to have been followed or beacons activated.
Absolute tragedy.

"It is a catastrophe the likes of which Air France has never seen," Nicolas Sarkozy said after meeting relatives and friends of passengers at a crisis centre at Charles de Gaulle airport.
Hang on a minute.Didnt an air france concorde crash in 1999/2000? or am i wrong?
It is terrible news for friends/family but i agree with some comments on here. How can a plane just dissapear?they have Gps etc black boxes, and they must have an idea of where it went down between the time they lost contact and the time the search teams reached the relevant area of lost contact,so surely they could from that create a realistic search radius?
I dont know i dont work for the government and dont proclaim myself to be all knowledgeable god of everything.but come on,with all the technology around now, they should find it,even if they only find the plane....
the media often use scare tactics to subdue the nations into fear and hibernation,u never know they may "find survivors by morning" to show their power or they may not,to scare us into submissal.
governments and media are a powerfull thing, its true to not believe everthing on the radio/television or in the newspapers.
sorry to go on, i do feel for relatives and friends but can they really expect us to believe a plane just dissapeared???

4000m deep in some places
That is some depth. Wonder what the pressure is at that depth? I heard once that the pressure of where the Titanic lies is something like 1 ton per squre inch
Bit off subject here but it amases me how we all spend so much money on going into space yet the bottom of our oceans have never been searched.

I've thought that before too. Think about all the crazy shit that must be down there, ok, alot of it will be rotted away now but it must hold loads of stories from the past.

there's multi- billions of pounds worth of stuff at the bottom of the sea's and ocean's, but its also a multi-million pound operation that you would need to recover it.......
worth it in the long run, like has already been said, there's so much history down there that the world is missing

I worked with a guy that had a trawler, but he sold it and went working offshore, I asked him the strangest thing he's caught, he said he once pulled up a buldozer in one of his nets! Also says he knew loads of folk who have found bodies etc and the majority of folk just leave them alone.
Agree with what's said above, funny how it's reported in the media, the people are obviously dead, but they are "missing", and they must have SOME idea where it was, saying there is no idea is just dramatisig it. They have records of the flight plan, and when they last had comms with it, so that woukld give some idea when it crashed, BUT being so high up and having only best guess when it happened it must be a massive area to search. i reckon if they don't find any floating wreckage they won't find it for ages as there be no tell tale where to focus on.

Instead of planes having all these amsing rafts and shit under the chairs why dont they put a parachute under there instead
I mean what use is a raft if a plane is heading towards the sea at 550mph, unless the Captain is the one who did that fantastic landing on the Hudson, other than that all passengers are fu~ked!! I say get them doors open, all have a little jump out and pull some bit of string, hey presto...... a nice chilled landing....lol!!
Or..... They could hand out parachutes when you board the plane. I dont think I would mind sitting on a plane for a few hours with some big rucksack thing on my back, lol!!

You're right Johnny moder planes (737's etc) are built to take a lightning strike - there was a documetary on discovery about them being made and they went through this

Soooo true. What is this country coming to?
Interesting about the bomb, maybe? Planes can withstand lightning. Although the pilot did say 16 mins before they lost contact that there was a terrible storm and severe turbulance.
Warren is the one who most prob' knows the best. He was in the military for years.

Being an airbus i've heard strange stories about these before with the flyby wire etc..... like having to reboot in midair etc.

Therefore at a depth of 4000m the pressure would be 401 bar or 5817 psi.
To compare it to the Titanic pressure you mentioned, this would be 2.64 tonnes per square inch
