Default Home security

right the missus has decided its time for an alarm and cctv

had a company out and they have quoted £520+ vat fitted for

gardtec alarm with 595 panel

3 pet pir sensors

live and decoy bells

shock sensor for the back door

contacts for the front door

2 key fobs

oh and as the house had an alarm there is already all the wiring that will be reused

also want to get a camera to keep an eye on the cossy and they will supply and fit a covert camera with a 500gig hard drive for around £200+vat

So does all this sound about right and is there anything else I want to be having/ looking to add

Personally Matt, I think a covert camera should be in addition to a big fuck off clearly visible camera to act as a deterrent.

The only problem with that I suppose is a decent thief will see it and think there's some special goodies in your house...

There's some good value 2/3/4 camera set ups here http://www.cctvdirect.co.uk/CCTV+Kit...+CCTV+Kits.htm

Let me know if you go for one as I'm thinking about it too and they may do a discount!

You wont use it mate. Our house is alarmed and never use it. You say to yourself "I'm only popping to the shops back in 5 mins dont need to set it".

Do you leave a dog in your house for 2 weeks when you're on holiday?

that sounds a little on the dear side mate if its already wired up,i would say there £150-£200 + vat in materials there,if i was estimating for the job (would personally have a code also instead of a fob)

on average i usually take a day and half to wire up,install & commission

so they have about 4-5 work to do and get £320

nice little earner

but then i dont know what labour costs are like where you

D.

This is the equiptment i fit into most houses.....

panel - http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burgl...-9651EN-41.asp

pirs - http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burgl...or-MEQBLUE.asp

door contacts - http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burgl...t-White-SC.asp

bell - http://www.alertelectrical.com/Burgl...under-ODY5.asp

All else you would really need is a new battery, internal speaker and speech dialler if you wanted the alarm to contact you if activated. The panel is really user friendly compared to alot of other alarm panels ive used.couldnt be easier to use and program. And the bell is a new one the company i work for has started using and they are really good.best ive come across.

If the wiring is already done that kit could be fitted in half a day easy.

I bought a Yale alarm out of Homebase, wireless sensors on all the windows and doors even on the shed and garage and if it gets set off it will ring up to 3 phone numbers stored into it.

as above most galaxy panels have on board diallers aswell that seems expensive if the wires are there

remote fobs are too risky IMO. Most people will stick them on thier keys. loose keys and they have total access to your house with no blaring alarm. At least with a code and a dialer you will know they breaking in.

Sadly the "average" burglary lasts less than 5 minutes so all the alarms in the world wont stop a determined one as police wont be there in 5, and chances are you wont be either. Will scare off the druggies and kids etc though.

Deterrant factor can be useful but its a balance between deterence and attracting attention.

Its not just about alarms though, good door and window looks, secure designed windows (eg internal beading on DG is more secure than external beading of older designs), locking up valuables (eg id, car keys cash etc), secure back gates, hard to climb fencing, outdoor lights etc etc etc

Gte the kit your self off the bay of e. If wires already there then its real easy to wire up.I can pm you and talk u thru. The camera is not a bad price though id also stick a dummy one up too for deterrent.
Fobs have to be used by big companies as its a nacoss approval thing. Crap really as once they got the fob (which is normally kept on the same keys as house) then they got your alarm off too.

Matt, as they are using the existing wiring i think that a bit expensive. I have 3 PIR's, remote key pad, 4 screamers front and back door sensors. In the garage i have 2 additional PIR's and 3 door switches all wired through the tamper circuit in the house alarm and also wired into a seperate garage alarm and all the materials cost me £175. In additional to that i bought a 4 camera wireless camera kit for £80 off ebay from hong kong. The kit consists of 4 camera and a control box which plugs into my HD recorder, its really good for the money. The cameras cover front, side and rear of the house and inside the garage also.
One thing to remember if you get a camera make sure you display signs telling anyone coming on to you property you have cameras. I got in hot water with the old bill and was cautioned for not having signs..... Yes i no it stupid but its the law apperenty
