Default LPG cars- Who has one?

Just wondering, who has an LPG converted car? How do you find it price wise compared to normal fuel, do you save a lot or not a great deal?

I do.

3.0 petrol x5.

46.9 or 48.9p per litre depending on closest garage here.

same ish mpg as petrol, maybe 10% less.

£1850 conversion cost.

pays for itself within 14000 miles maybe.

You got one in the end then

Its well worth converting if you plan to keep the car a while or clock up a few miles

Ive got Tiffs old Audi which runs LPG - has a few issues switching from Petrol to Gas though and when it does switch it wont always stay on gas - been told its likely the compressor needs replacing due to symptoms. Anyone know if that sounds about right? and how much a new compressor is lol?

possibly temp switch, the lpg system needs some heat to work properly so if it thinks the engine is cold then it will switch back to petrol. may just be a loose/shorted wire or a dodgy temp switch

How long will the price of LPG stay cheap for? That's kind of putting me off looking into it. IIRC the tax is 'fixed' for a certain time, then may well go up??

Thanks i dont suppose you'd know roughly where that would be? in car? in boot? in engine bay?

Dan - trick is to buy one already converted!

most just tap into the original sensors so trace the wiring from there

I used to run my 5.9 V8 Jeep on LPG, on average paid 0.50 euro's a litre.
Was extremely thirsty due to a very heavy right foot (120 MPH all day long not a problem with this car!), actually blew up the 5.2 that used to be in it lol

Should be interesting as it does have benefits over petrol, Phil Price Rally School run all their cars on LPG, inc a group a Escort Cosworth and a Grp Impreza and they had no issues at all when I was driving them.

I converted a Gsi (3.2) to BRC, it was a great car and responded very well to LPG, that was on a BRC sequent 56 system, the company I worked for had done one on Prins which was equally as good, no power loss at all and the conversion could be made to look factory.

What system is it ? could be a lambda box picking up a wrong signal, poor rpm but as mentioned most probably something temperature or pressure related, the temp sensor will probably be in the vaporizer or as mentioned is sometime installed into a original water hose, check the connections on anything that looks non standard.

Forecourts are taking the piss not the government, there are plenty of places to get LPG VERY cheap, most garages know they can make more money on selling LPG than petrol as long as its just about half the cost of fuel most people think their getting a good deal, Countrywide filling stations are a very good way to save a lot of money IF you are within the areas that they cover (which I was now)

dave it could well be that. my x5 has an intermittent problem and took it to the fitter. 1 of which is car swapping back to petrol on its own. he diagnosed faulty gas temp sensor on mine. also my lambda sensor reading funny. getting changed when they arrive

What engine ? is it a 1.8 T ?

Water pumps can fall apart on some of the VAG range which only seem to show up when running on LPG as the water pressure isn't adequate enough to feed the vaporizer all the time, scratched my haed over that fault so many times for it to only turn out it was totally not LPG related
