I have done over 1,000 on my cars new engine, today i was at shell and though i will give it a tank of optimax and see if it improves the cars running,


Well what a bad idea that was.... It now seems to have speed the idle timing up and its running a little lumpy now also on tickover you can smell the petrol if you stand near the rear of the car.

Is this because of the optimax? should i be using a led additive for the petrol?

whilst it is possible that that youve put in a shonky batch of fuel i think it's unlikely

no mate it should be fine on unleaded with out any additives!!Although due to the different octane ratings of unleaded to super unleaded it might effect the running of a rst due to the ignition timing

higher octane fuel will not affect the running of the car set up to run on a lower octane

you should not have put 95 in it tho to start with always run an RST on high octane fuel

it was running mint on 95 ron, infact the best i have had a rst running, and now its being a dog

No idea, my mate set the car up after i built the engine, Hes owned RST's for 20 years so he knows his shiz, shame hes on holiday so i cant get it sorted

Im really pissed off, as it was perfect until i put optimax in it,
and for the life of me do not think it can be anything else, as its done 1,000miles bang on, and run better than any rst i had before.

optimax does give off a strong smell compared to other fuels.........

As for fueling...car may have been overfueling anyhow and now you put some propper fuel in it may not like the extra fuel.. your mate mayby good with rs turbo's and has prob set your ign timing spot on for you but fueling wise if he has not got the right gear i doubt it has been checked...

mine used to do the same just next time run it on 95 octane and it will be ok

Get it setup with a tank of optimax in it........will be spot on then.....should not be using normal unleaded in it ......well unless it has been setup on it then maby but more power to be had when done on optimax...

Get it in for a proper set up with a full tank of optimax.

I run my fiesta turbo and cossie on optimax and never had any probs. agree with the smell being a bit strong aswell

For someone with the name 'rs-tuner' this really isn't great advice.

Get it set up by a reputable tuner.

Optimax will make NO DIFFERENCE to the running of your car!!

High octane fuel basically resists detenation better than lower octane fuels meaning it is less likely to explode due to high cylinder temps or pressures, When fuel is ignited by the spark plug it is a controlled burn. When detonation takes place it is a serious explosion!

Weather your engine takes advantage of this high octane depends what you tell it to do ie ignition advance. It will not cause any advirse affects on an engine that doesnt require it, other than in your pocket!

This not correct.
Any fuel unit will contain a certain amount of energy, if the unit of energy changes so do the characteristics of the engine, the clue here is that the engine idle speed increased, suggesting it is being used either more effeciently or it is releasing more energy from same fuel unit quantity, in an ideal world timing etc would be tweaked to gain further from this.
In short Optimax will NOT cause a problem, but running lesser grade fuel could mask a problem, all that's happened is the Optimax has told you the car needs setting up.

i did the other way round.had my car setup on optimax at jamsport,but there isnt a shell garage local 2 me.nearest is 19 miles away so occasionally i put super in it.but as the timing was set up for optimax high octane fuel it used to pink and never ran as sweet as wen the optimax was in it.

Optimax always foulded plugs on my stage 3 cossie with collins chip - used other 98 fuel without problems.

Someone once told me that optimax had a different fuel density (more dense - same octane) not sure if this is crap?

Not sure is Optimax same in UK as Aus.

Set car up with optimax or try another high octane fuel.

I ran my Rst on regular unleaded for 3 years problem free. I then decided one day to put Shell Optimax in ( Called V-Power at the time ) and it ran and idled fine but what I did notice was the running temperature was a lot hotter and it DID MESS my plugs up.

I was lead to beleive that 98 Ron burns at a hotter temperature and this was the cause of my problem.

I brimmed up with normal regular 95 Ron unleaded and changed the plugs and had no further issue.

Thats my experience with it. I do use it in my Cossie now though
