High octane fuel basically resists detenation better than lower octane fuels meaning it is less likely to explode due to high cylinder temps or pressures, When fuel is ignited by the spark plug it is a controlled burn. When detonation takes place it is a serious explosion!
Weather your engine takes advantage of this high octane depends what you tell it to do ie ignition advance. It will not cause any advirse affects on an engine that doesnt require it, other than in your pocket!

Any fuel unit will contain a certain amount of energy, if the unit of energy changes so do the characteristics of the engine, the clue here is that the engine idle speed increased, suggesting it is being used either more effeciently or it is releasing more energy from same fuel unit quantity, in an ideal world timing etc would be tweaked to gain further from this.
In short Optimax will NOT cause a problem, but running lesser grade fuel could mask a problem, all that's happened is the Optimax has told you the car needs setting up.
