Default Gearbox problem Help needed

Hello people hopefully somebody can help me out.
Earlier today my misses borrowed my car(2006 focus ST) to go and do some shopping. When she got back she told me that when she was about to setting off from a set of traffic lights her leg slipped off the clutch peddle and the car stalled. When she started it back up and set off there was a very loud knocking noise from under the car. I took the car for a little drive to find out what she was talking about. After a few yards i knew there was something badly wrong. When its rolling in a straight line there is a nasty knock and a slight shudder right through the car. I immediately decided to head back and park it in the garage. While i was turning to head back there was a huge knock and the car struggled to turn. I got out to see if a driveshaft or something had popped out but i couldn't see anything. I eventually nursed the car back home and parked it in my driveway.
I'm fairly sure its the gearbox or maybe the diff in the gearbox that's giving up. Just wondering has this happened anyone on here and was it an expensive fix. Could really do without another expensive bill at the mo
Cheers for any help

If you're lucky it'll be a CV joint, if you're not it'll be the diff. I knackered the diff in my Escort and it was the same as what you're saying but it was an almighty knock when it did it. It gave up completely after a couple of miles with all the teeth stripped. Happy days.

When i had the steering turned there was an almighty knock and the car struggled to move. Sounded like a metal grinding noise

Does sounds like a cv joint. Could you not get it sorted under warranty?
