If you're lucky it'll be a CV joint, if you're not it'll be the diff. I knackered the diff in my Escort and it was the same as what you're saying but it was an almighty knock when it did it. It gave up completely after a couple of miles with all the teeth stripped. Happy days.

When i had the steering turned there was an almighty knock and the car struggled to move. Sounded like a metal grinding noise
