Bodyshop people does this sound fair?
I've been quoted £220 +VAT for spraying a tailgate for my s2
No glass in it and taken off the car myself is that reasonable?
I'm totally in the dark when it comes to this thats all
Thanks

its about right if your just a normal customer - a few sprayers on here that might do it cheaper (220 plus vodka & tonic is a tad on the dear side)
i guess that price was fitted back to the car

yeah thats a fair price for a good quality job! I would charge £225 for bonnet or bootlid inside out and that would be spotless..

depends on the garage,is it a proper place with loads of staff who need paying, ovens in the spray booths, customer reception with tv and coffee etc or a back street garage with shit everwhere, porn on the walls and a sprayer who doesn't wear a mask when he's wafting as he can't smoke properly

tbh for that price id be wanting it fitted back to the car.
i know its not hard to fit a boot yourself but just to make sure paint matches etc.
and be nothing worse damaging it when putting it on or fitting window to it

that is a bit expensive to be fair i know paints not cheap any more and you do get what you pay for... when i used to work in a bodyshop we used to charge joe blogs of the street about £100 cash for a bumper and about £150 cash for a bonnet or boot. that way it dont have to go through the books and they can always loose some paint. was that a cash price????

if your after a proper job i would be very interested to make sure the colour match is spot on if you like the car, i have seen car bodywork van goff would be proud of exept when put on the car the match is so terrible he would chop his other ear off in disgust at such a obvious colour discrepancy.
a lot of body shops charge proper till cos they blend the colour into other panels and then say with mettalic then laquer a wider area to perfect a blow in

I want a decent job done, i keep it clean and show it so I'm thinking it may be worth going for a full spray now.
They did say it'd be a bit cheaper for cash but I don't know how much.

mate you looking at proper wages for a full job,its a pain in the arse doing a full proper paintjob and the price reflects this, if you car just needs the boot doing and the rest is ok i would show the place the whole lot and tell them you want a decent colour match, theres nothing worse than cars with 5 shades of the same paint, and i would deffo want to see some of their work if having a full blow over and paying a lot.

Years ago I had the rear bumper painted on my Escort Cossie at a Ford Dealer.
It was £150+VAT which was 4 hours labour at £25 per hour and £50+VAT materials.
I couldnt argue with that and questioned why the labour rate was so cheap compared to workshop prices and the body shop manager said it was because the insurance companies force the rate down.
So with the cost of materials going up I dont think they are too far off the mark as I bet there is more than 4 hours in prepping the tailgate.

also people get the impression if they take it to a accident approved body shop they will get the best finish . not true
as haven worked in many so seen it for myself bout 99% of the peoples attitudes that work there is a fuck it its an old car anyway and if ure colour is wrong there just goni make a excuse similar
also as someone said above would be wanting it fitted by them to so they can see the colour match and so can u before u pay for it also incase u chip or damage it when fitten then ure back to square 1 .
just a few pionts for you to consider

£220+vat is a touch on the high side for a solid colour (Im assuming its for the car in your sig)
If you were bringing it to us to paint then I would expect to charge £140+vat for a "standard" quality of finish - ie very little prep if the tailgate was in generally good condition. And allow an extra couple of hours to get rid of any blemishes and maybe a couple extra layers of paint or lacquer if you wanted a "showcar" standard of finish to make it £200+vat.
As others have said - you get what you pay for though and the best thing I think is for a customer to be given a choice, which is why we seem to be a bit different to the norm for bodyshops !!

4.2 hours at £30ph (excluding any repairs) + £76.19 p&m
Total exc vat = 202.19
Total inc vat = 237.57
that is what our cheaper estimating system has just worked it out as.. (Audatex)
to add its £310.51 inc vat on the other system. (Glassmatix)
