Default Tranlining - causes and rectification?

Well the MR2 tramlines really badly.

by that i mean it pulls you into the dips and bumps in the road. it steers for you, not you steering it (this is a good definition isnt it?)

anyway, it has aftermarket 17" wheels and i beleive this is the cause?

So, i want to remove the tramlining and need to work out the best way to go about that. do i need to replace the wheels and go back to stock alloys (15") could it be that the tyres are the cause? is it the offset? the geomety?

basically if i can avoid swapping the wheels then great as that'll save me a lot of money

get the tracking checked first, if its ok,then it is probably the wrong offset wheels.

What size tyres are on the front?

I went from 245/45 R17 properly tramlined to 225/45 R17 perfect no tramlining at all. Just changed the tyres and that was it, no tracking / geometery / offset change.

i havent had a 4WA done so dont have the geo set up. i'm reluctant to spend money on a full geo if what its got fitted isnt suitable.

might go get the tracking done now tho..

There is no point in thinking about the rason if we don't know if the geometry is anyhow sensible. On MR2 you have some adjustability and it can properly ruin handling if it's wrong. Doesn't have to be far off to handle like shite too.

Tends to be combination of the following:

- Too much toe out
- Tyres too wide
- Too much scrub angle - offset too low or crap suspension design

If they are correct offset and overall wheel radius is more or less the same you should be fine. I mean with lower tyre on bigger wheels the car will be more prone to follow road cambers etc. But it's shouldn't be bad. Especially that you guys have great roads in the UK compared to what I have (I know, I just came back from UK)

I had an s2000 once that was awfull tramlining and moving around (especially when letting off after accelerating) I had the geo checked etc and in the end it was just the tyres being worn on the insides. It was really bad and I was convinced it was tracking or geometry but tyres sorted it.

Could knackered bushes / track rod ends be a cause?

rich, thats a possibility, as i suspect there's something amiss in the front suspension department, sounds a bit loud/knocky over bumps etc. and i'm guessing MR2s arent supposed to be THAT shonky... lol

not had a chance to take a look yet

Sounds like it then, big wheels will add more stress to bushes so will wear quicker. Get it up in the air and give the wheels a good shake to see where the play is!

Anyway Jim my mate had an MR2, same shape as you and there were great many things that used to become loose on this one, the rear suspension actually is a Celica front suspension and it's not that great as rear suspension. I remember he had it on 17'' and it was fine according to him. I only drove it once and in the snow so I can't say as in the snow MR2 is as hardcore as it gets.

The bottom arms on my Fiesta were fucked, and it always tramlined. Wheel offset and tracking was correct though.
